Technology-Connected Lesson Plan

Title: /

Estimating with Frank

Grade Levels: / 1-6
Curriculum Areas: / :  Math and Language Arts
Measurable Objectives: / :  TLW use estimation to determine the answer to real world math problems
LA Content Standards: / N-3-E reading, writing, representing, comparing, ordering, and using whole numbers in a variety of forms (e.g., standard notation, number line, and geometrical representation;
N-7-E constructing, using, and explaining procedures to compute and estimate with whole numbers (e.g., mental math strategies)
N-9-E demonstrating the connection of number and number relations to the other strands and to real-life situations.
N-6-M constructing, using, and explaining procedures to compute and estimate with rational numbers employing mental math strategies;
Technology Guidelines: /

Technology Research Tools (Linking and Generating Knowledge Foundation Skill)

¨  Students use technology tools to process data and report results.
Technology Communication Tools (Communication Foundation Skill)
¨  Students use telecommunications to collaborate, publish, and interact with peers, experts and other audiences.
Technology Connection: / :  Computer/TV/PowerPoint or TV/FlexCam, KidPix or KidWorks
Procedures: / :  Opening activity- Have student estimate (guess) how many objects such as unifix cubes in a jar- Put their guess on the board or wall using stickies
:  Use a Flex Cam or PowerPoint to allow the students view the book, Counting On Frank as it is read to the class
:  Discuss how Frank used estimation to solve his math problems.
:  Go back a count the number of items in the jar and let the student explain how they can up with their answer
:  Discuss some examples in your room such how many hands would it take to cover a desktop or notebook- try several with your students
:  Student could make of graph of their guesses or put them in greatest to least order
:  Use KidPix or KidWorks to let the students illustrate and explain an estimation problem.
Materials: / :  unifix cubes, jar, stickies, Counting on Frank by Rod Clements, and other objects to estimate
Assessment: / :  Participation and KidPix or Kid Works product
