THE INCREDIBLE CELL – PROJECT

In Science models are used to make complex ideas easier to understand. To demonstrate your knowledge of plant and animal cells you are to construct a model that adheres to the following guidelines.

1. Choose to make a plant or animal cell.

2. The cell must include the following structures:

Plant Cell: cell wall, cell membrane, cytoplasm, nucleus, vacuole, chloroplasts, rough endoplasmic reticulum, ribosomes, golgi complex, mitochondria

Animal Cell: cell membrane, cytoplasm, cytoskeleton, nucleus, lysosome, vacuole, rough endoplasmic reticulum, ribosomes, golgi complex, mitochondria

3. The choice of medium is open. Students have made play doh or clay models, edible models, styrofoam models, fabric models, mobiles. You should keep in mind that a cell is three dimensional, and the model must reflect that concept.

4. The cell must be identified as plant or animal. Each organelle must be fully labeled with name and function or numbered and identified using a key containing full name and function. Grading rubric is attached.

5. Edible projects are due ______.

All other projects are due on ______.

6. Use your imaginations and have fun! I am available for any questions, but make sure you ask by______so you can work on your project over the weekend.

Date______

Dear Parent,

Your child has been assigned a project for Science Class. In order to

encourage each student to do his or her best work, we are asking for your assistance in

1.  Acknowledging the due date.

2.  Assistance in obtaining supplies.

3.  Discussing their progress on a nightly basis (with them).

If you have any questions, please email your child’s teacher or call 628-3275 with the best time for us to reach you.

THANK YOU!

Mr. Cipollini, Mrs. Maringola, Mrs. Pepin

Suggested time line for the Incredible Cell Project Dates given in class!

October Talk to Parents

Look online for ideas

Decide what to make (plant or animal cell)

Decide what supplies are needed

Decide when you will get supplies

October Make labels (or key) for model (use rubric to make sure you

remember all of the necessary organelles for your cell)

Check your spelling!

Purchase supplies

Begin to make model if not edible

Plan when you will make the edible model (talk to an adult if you need to use the kitchen)

October Make or finish making model

October Edible Cells are due

October Non-edible cells are due
