DAVID POTTS

Biography

David Potts aka ‘Pottsy’ dishes up a perfect retro-modern sound and champions a MODchester revival whilst staying in tune with his former RAM & Monaco markets. He might look like he’s borrowed Noel Gallagher’s eyebrows, John Lennon’s face and Paul Weller’s hair, his talent is anything but derivative - it’s original and inspired, songwriting crafted from a broad range of influences.

In spite of Manchester’s familiarity with RAM, Pottsy is still most remembered globally as one half of Monaco, the partnership with New Orders’ Peter Hook. The two albums sold just under a million and the infectious sha-la-la ‘What Do You Want From Me’ charted at number 11, still a radio favourite. New Order forums often buzz with debate about whether Monaco may re-form one day soon, fuelled by recent collaborations such as the Nordorff-Robbins charity gigs.

However the David Potts sound today is a long way from where Monaco left off – it’s mature songwriting with an imaginative quirkiness falling somewhere between the Beatles and The Jam with a psychedelic twist with hugely catchy melodies, heartfelt lyrics and Pottsy’s trademark guitars.

The current solo album ‘Coming Up for Air’ was entirely self-produced by Potts with support from loyal ex-RAM band members Steve Brannan (Bass) and Paul Kehoe (Drums) and the odd session player. Mixed at Airtight in Chorlton by Tom Knot (The Earlies) and mastered at The Exchange, London by Guy Davie (Badly Drawn Boy, Royksopp). The first single, ‘I’m the Greatest’, an ironic take on rock-celebrity reached Radio 2 & Radio 6 audiences and the XFM playlist. A new double A-side ‘Monkey in the Rain / Roll Up!’ is scheduled for an August 2007 release.

Ram releases ‘Songs On Page One’ and ‘For Your Love’ received near-cult reviews and a loyal following, but self-releasing the new album allowed far more creative freedom as Pottsy explains, “Setting up my label means I can make the music I’m passionate about and get it out there. MySpace is a help and digital means that I can reach those ex-Monaco fans in the States and Japan“. In addition to Universal Distribution, Pottsy’s Maximum Records label has launched its own online store to sell his music.

As well as radio & club DJ spots Potts still manages to squeeze in work as a producer for upcoming Manchester talent as well as working on his Ping Pong Pang project; think charming gallic cinema-scapes, Air, Serge Gainsbourg and David Axlerod. He has also recently lent a hand with the Community 2: A New Order Online Tribute compilation, covering ‘The Village’ as a headline track together with ‘A Retroforward Compilation’, an additional album of material by the tribute artists. He’s also contributed a track ‘Driving’ to the recent ‘Sealed With A Loving Flick’ compilation release from Manchester Switchflicker records.
