Oluwaseyi Somefun is a Ph.D. candidate in the Demography and Population Studies program at the University of Witwatersrand—her work has resulted in a number of publications including two manuscripts that have been recently accepted at the International Association for Adolescent Health 11th World Congress on Adolescent Health in India and the XXVIII IUSSP International Population Conference in Cape Town, South Africa.
She teaches statistics and introduction to demographic methods in addition to coordinating research activities in the Demography and Population Studies Department. Her research focuses on youth development in sub-Saharan Africa. In her ongoing doctoral work, Oluwaseyi is exploring a strength-based approach to understanding youth development. Particularly, she aims to examine how positive behaviours and environments of young people mediate, mitigate, and help them to overcome the risks they face. She is passionate about development in Africa and believes that youth empowerment is a main catalyst to drive progress on the continent.
