Release date: 2003-10-01
EWS, Britain´s leading rail freight operator, and Transfesa UK Ltd today held a joint marketing event at the EWS Willesden container terminal in North London.
The event was aimed at developing business on Transfesa´s daily Anglo-Spanish service and highlighted the ability of the service to provide fast transit times on this important freight route. Transfesa and EWS made presentations to existing and prospective customers and there was a demonstration of Transfesa´s equipment now in use on the service.
Doug Taylor, EWS general manager International, who inaugurated the enhanced service with Arturo Boix from Transfesa, Madrid, commented: „I am happy to say that traffic through the Tunnel has recovered since the problems of 2002, and I am particularly delighted that the Transfesa service linking the UK and Spain has not only survived, but prospered.”
”We look forward to working with our long-standing partner to increase its frequency and the range of customers using it yet further in the months to come,“ added Doug. “We are seeing continuing growth in rail movements through the Tunnel and are confident that Willesden will play a key role as the principal UK terminal for UK services.”
Joe Pickers, Transfesa UKŽs general manager added: “We echo Doug´s comments and feel that streamlining our service and offering greater flexibility will enhance an established service, allowing its benefits to be offered to a wider market place.
”We knew there was a commercial market to be explored but we had to ensure continuity of our existing operation. With the help of EWS we have expanded our service with additional calls at Silla Terminal (Valencia) and Willesden. In conjunction with this, we are introducing additional trains on the service so that we have greater flexibility and capacity, and all trains will now follow the Silla/Willesden pathway - both northbound and southbound.”
”There will be no need for cargo transhipment at the French/Spanish border”, added Joe. “Transfesa has it´s own, patented, axle-changing facilities to deal with the problems caused by the difference in the track gauge between Spain and the rest of Europe, so we can offer a genuine sealed swap body intermodal transit on a door to door basis.“
