INTRODUCTION

As we reflect back over the events of the Passion Week, we discover that Jesus’ disciples experienced a roller coaster ride of emotions and experiences as the events unfolded. Now these events were not without prior warning, for on several occasions the Lord spoke to them before the fact, so that they might be prepared. But like many of us today, the words went over their heads because they were focused on what they expected and not what He proclaimed.

Now at the Cross as the Lord gave up the ghost and all seemed lost, the deflated disciples were scattered and most could not be found. (Read Zechariah 13:7). They went to their places of refuge until very early the third day, a rousing cry of women who had been to the tomb, broke the silence of sympathy and sighing, after hearing the message of the angelic proclaimers, “Why seek you the living among the dead? He is not here, but is risen: remember how he spake unto you when He was yet in Galilee…” Luke 24:5-6.

The teachings of Jesus Christ are confirmed by His resurrection and await our sincere perusal, that we might be encouraged and pursue Him with all our might!

LESSON OUTLINE

I. Empty Tomb. Luke 24:1-12

Beloved, the Sunday School lesson opens with verse 13, but how can one enter a game at the 3rd quarter or a movie or play 30 minutes into its starting, and not have questions about what has happened? The account of the “Empty Tomb” is the swan song of the Gospel! It is the heart of every sermon…“early the third day morning He got up with all power in His hands!” All the Gospel writers present this great truth in their expounding. (Read Matthew 28:1-10; Mark 16:1-11; Luke 24:1-12 and John 20:1-18). Please read and digest, then give a shout! I conclude this part of the lesson with the words of the Apostle Paul in I Corinthians 15:14-20, “And if Christ be not risen, then is our preaching vain, and your faith is also vain. Yea, and we are found false witnesses of God; because we have testified of God that he raised up Christ: whom he raised not up, if so be that the dead rise not. For if the dead rise not, then is not Christ raised: And if Christ be not raised, your faith is vain; ye are yet in your sins. Then they also which are fallen asleep in Christ are perished. If in this life only we have hope in Christ, we are of all men most miserable. But now is Christ risen from the dead, and become the firstfruits of them that slept.”

II. Emmaus Road Encounter. Luke 24:13-29

Now this is the heart of the Sunday School lesson for this week:

A. The encounter. vss. 13-17

Two disciples returning home from Jerusalem unknowingly encounter the risen Christ as He joins Himself to them on the

road from Jerusalem to Emmaus about a 7.5 mile journey by foot. (How amazing that grief and despair can blind the

eyes of an individual. No wonder Hebrews 12 declares that we should “look unto Jesus, who is the author and finisher

of our faith.”) But as Jesus joined them, He listened and then pretended to not know what was going on (vs. 17).

B. The expressions. vss. 18-21 (Note: vss. 22-24 not included in the lesson).

Now that Jesus has spurred their attention, they began to vent their grief in expressions that recounted the past events.

1. The request of Cleopas. vs. 18

Where have you been stranger? You don’t know what’s been going on in Jerusalem? He assumed that the crucifixion of Jesus was the hottest news off the press. And beloved, it was and it still has great relevance, as Isaiah 53:5 reminds us, “… he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed.” Or as the hymnist wrote, “Jesus paid it all and all to Him I owe.”

2. The recapping. vss. 19-24

After a request of Jesus as to what things, both Cleopas and the unnamed disciple began to recap all the events of the past days, describing what had been done to Jesus Christ (vss. 19-20). Also, what the disciples had personally expected because of His life and teachings, but had lost hope because of Jesus’ apparent untimely death (vs. 21). They also spoke of the hearsay of the women as they saw it, that the grave where Jesus had been buried was empty, angels announced His resurrection and disciples came and found not the body. But there was no joy because these men’s eyes were blinded by grief and unbelief for the moment (vss. 22-24).

3. The exposition. vss. 25-29

It is at this point that Jesus expounds the scriptures to them and the Word will bring relief and prepare them for their

ultimate deliverance.

a. The rebuke. vs. 25

b. The reminder. vss. 26-27

Keeping this simple yet profound, Jesus opened the scriptures (Moses, the Law and the Prophets). (Read Deuteronomy 18:18-19; Jeremiah 23:5-6; John 1:45.

c. The refreshment. vss. 28-29

The word of God brought refreshment to the souls of the bewildered disciples and they sought to hear more, and

offered Jesus an invitation to stay longer with them by offering hospitality! I Timothy 3:2 reminds us of the

importance of “hospitality.”

III. Energizing an Expression of Joy. Luke 24:30-35

Jesus’ teachings brought energy and His company, joy. Union Gospel Press Expositor and Illuminator declares that Jesus’ fellowship in the house of the disciples revealed His resurrection as seen in the following:

A. “Broken Bread.” vss. 30-31

As Jesus blessed and brake the bread at dinner, their eyes were unveiled and they knew it was Him…Joy!

B. “Burning Hearts.” vss. 32-33

Burning hearts will always be cause for action. They forgot the time of evening and the distance of travel and left immediately to share the good news with the other disciples.

C. “Belief Confirmed.” vss. 34-35

There is no greater joy than personal confirmation and one’s belief and the fellowship of those who are in agreement (Amos 3:3). To me this is joy unspeakable and full of glory!
