Working with art boards

  1. Verify that no documents are open and that smart guides are activated.

Tip: the smart guides command is on the view menu.

  1. Click file on the menu bar, then click new

The new dialogue box opens.

  1. Type winning business collateral in the name text box.
  2. Set the number of artboards to 3, then click the grid by row button.
  3. Set the spacing and columns text boxes to 2.
  4. Set the width to 5 and the height to 8.5
  5. Verify that the units are set to inches.
  6. Click ok.

When you click ok, the three art boards fit in your document window.

  1. Click the selection tool, then click each art board to make each active.
  2. Click the top-right art board to make it the active art board, click view on the menu bar, and then click fit art board to window.
  3. Click view on the menu bar, then click fit all in window.
  4. Save the file as winning business collateral.

Create and name artboards

  1. Click the art board tool.
  2. Click the new art board icon on the control panel.
  3. Float your cursor over the art boards and position the new art board under the 3rd art board.
  4. Click to position the new art board.

The new art board button creates a new art board at the specified document size

  1. Click the top-right art board, then click the delete art board icon on the control panel.

Tip: you can also click the small x in the upper right corner to delete an art board.

  1. Click and drag with the art board tool to create a small new art board.
  2. Press and hold the option key, then drag and drop a copy of the new artboard in the space beneath it.
  3. Click the bottom-left art board to select it, then type bookmark in the name text box on the control panel.
  4. Name the bottom right art board buckslip
  5. Name the top-left art board letterhead
  6. Name the two new objects biz card front and biz card (the two smaller artboards) back respectively.

Resize and arrange artboards

  1. Click the artboard named bookmark to select it, type 2 in the W (width) panel on the control panel, then press return.
  2. Resize the art board named buckslip to 4” wide x 6” height.
  3. Resize the two business cards to 3.5” x 2.”
  4. Click the letterhead artboard, click the preset menu in the control panel, then click letter. The art board is resized to 8.5” x 11.”
  5. Click and drag the art boards to arrange them in this order:

  1. Click the selection tool to escape EDITING THE ART BOARDS MODE, then save the file.

Paste artwork between art boards

  1. Open the file named Winning logo.ai
  2. Click select on the menu bar click all, click edit on the menu bar, then click copy.
  3. Close winning logo.ai
  4. In the winning business collateral document, click the art board navigation menu list arrow in the lower-left corner, the click letterhead.
  5. Click edit on the menu bar, click paste, then position the logo on the top left part of the art board.
  6. Click edit on the menu bar, then click copy.

Even though the artwork is already copied, you need to copy it again so that it is copied from this specific location.

  1. Click the buckslip art board (farthest to the left) to make it the active artboard.
  2. Click edit on the menu bar, then click paste in place.

The artwork is placed in the same location, relative to the top-left corner of the artboard, on the buckslipartboard.

  1. Click edit on the menu bar, then click paste on all artboards
  2. Click view, click fit all in window, then compare your screen to this:
