COURSE LEARNING OBJECTIVES:

For Anatomy and Physiology I

  1. Describe how the body maintains homeostasis.
  2. Define the anatomic terms used to refer to the body in terms of directions and geometric planes.
  3. Describe the major cavities of the body and the organs they contain.
  4. Recognize terms related to the human body’s anatomy.
  5. Match anatomical terms with the appropriate physiology.
  6. List the major body systems.
  7. Relate chemistry to the field of anatomy and physiology.
  8. Illustrate the anatomical location of the components of a cell and explain their function.
  9. Describe how cells function and divide.
  10. Identify the major parts of skin, skeletal joints, muscle, and the nervous system and explain the function of each.
  11. Describe how muscle, bones, and nerves work together to create movement.
  12. Explain the role of the brain and spinal cord in consciousness and control of the body.
  13. Name several diseases and disorders of the organ systems discussed and explain what causes them.
  14. Explain how diseases and disorders of the body are detected and treated.
  15. Understand how homeostasis plays an important role in health and disease.

ATTENDANCE POLICY:

Attendance will be taken regularly in lecture. More than 2 absences will require an appointment with your instructor.

You are expected to be present for all exams. The ability to make up and examination is made on a case-to-case basis and may require a doctor’s note.

EVALUATION OF STUDENTS

Laboratory: Is a Pass/Fail and will constitute 25% of your grade. A minimum of 70% is needed to successfully complete the laboratory portion. Your final Laboratory grade will be forwarded to your lecture instructor at the end of the semester.

The laboratory experience most often reflects topics being discussed in lecture. It is a good idea to look over the lab experiment before you come to lab. Refer to the lab schedule to know what experiments / exercises to look over prior to lab. It is important to attend all labs. Missing any lab will jeopardize your grade for that lab.If you must miss a lab for any reason, please contact me, or discuss the absence with me prior to class.

Your grade will be based on 2 Laboratory Practical Exams that will test your knowledge of what is presented in lab.

Students will be required to keep a detailed notebook and responsible for keeping up with their Laboratory Exercises.

GENERAL COURSE POLICY STATEMENT’S:

Academic Dishonesty: Dishonesty includes, but is not limited to plagiarism, cribbing and cheating on examinations, quizzes, class writing assignments or papers. Any student aiding another student in any form of dishonesty is considered equally guilty” (OCC Student Handbook, pg. 35). Cheating is not acceptable and will result in a grade of 0 for that examination and will be turned over to the appropriate College source for disciplinary action. Please review policy #5180 in the student handbook for the penalties associated with plagiarism and cheating.

Statement of Plagiarism: Students should refer to the student handbook and review Policy #5180

Statement about Civility: Please refer to

Campus Resources and Services: Tutoring is available (a) in the Writing Center for writing assignments in all subject areas, not just English courses, and (b) in the Mathematics Tutoring Center. Tutoring information for all other subjects can be found on the Tutoring page on the college website. In additions, Study Strategy Seminars are scheduled each week and are posted on the college website under “Academics”. More information can be found by using the A-Z index on the college website (for example, under “T” for tutoring or under “S” for Study Strategy Seminars).
