Ø  Genesis 11 – Transition of History

o  From humanity (Adam-Noah) to family (Abram)

o  From rebellion (Babel) to faith (Abram)

o  From curse to blessing (see 1:28, 12:1-3, 13:15-16, 15:5,18, 17:6-8, 22:17-18, 25:11, 26:2-4, 27:27-29, 49:28)

Ø  God established his authority as Father, now he will demonstrate his grace as Friend

I.  The Journey of Abram

e.  Conflict in Canaan (13:5ff)

i.  The Source of conflict

1.  The surface problem is dealing with wealth

2.  The root problem is dealing with greed (i.e. pride, lust – 1Jn 2:16)

ii. The Result of conflict

1.  Lot chooses Sodom – pitched tent, lived, later: sat at gate (leader)

2.  Abram chooses God – given a more specific confirmation

3.  Abram responds in worship – choosing God over greed is Worship!

II.  The Campaign of Abram

a.  The reasons for conflict

i.  Kings ruled over small settlements (i.e. mayors) – fights over resources

ii. Abram has no concern – could justify staying out of the situation

1.  ______- It’s an unjust world … tough luck

2.  ______- Who needs the fight? Why risk more enemies?

3.  ______- Lot made his choice… let him face the consequences

iii.  Abram chooses to be his brother’s keeper (cf. Cain, Lk 19:10)

b.  The results in conflict

i.  Calls everyone together for the battle – every man involved!

ii. Attacks the problem without hestitation

iii.  Honors the team and returns the

c.  The return from conflict

i.  Enter Melchizedek (Ps 110:4, Heb 5-7)
