Course Description

In this course, students will learn about various currents in contemporary artistic practice, art theory pertaining to these trends, expanding on knowledge and skills developed in the Grade 11 course. The Grade 12 course is less-medium specific than its prerequisite, instead emphasizing conceptually-driven creative problem-solving assignments, rooted in contemporary artistic practice. Students will continue to build on their knowledge of the critical analysis process to interpret artworks and further examine the creative process in the production of their own work.

Unit 1 / Accumulation and Mass-Production: collecting and displaying quantities / 15 hours
Unit 2 / Conceptual art: sculpting and drawing for intellectuals / 15 hours
Unit 3 / History of Non-Traditional Media: analyzing artworks / 10 hours
Unit 4 / Text-Based Art: working with words / 10 hours
Unit 5 / Artist’s Books: challenging definitions / 15 hours
Unit 6 / Non-Paintings: conveying ideas without using images / 15 hours
Culminating Activity: making collective art / 15 hours
Unit 7 / Working in series: making small related work / 15 hours

Total: 110 Hours

Art Fee

A $25 art fee is collected from each student to help cover the cost of art materials, such as various sculpture and molding and casting materials. The fee is collected during the month of September.

Art Kit

Each student is asked to have a sketchbook (at least 5 ½” x 8 ½”). For the digital projects, it is strongly recommended that all students have a USB key with at least 4GB of storage capacity.
