Chinese Educational Assistant (Full Time)

Job Description

Working Relationship:

Chinese Educational Assistant (‘Chinese EA’ hereafter) is responsible to the Principal of his or her school through Head of Chinese where applicable and Line Manager of the Chinese Team.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

1. Professional Competence and Skills

·  Chinese EA should possess native or near native competence in the Chinese language, with accurate pronunciation in Putonghua, and functional English. Formal teaching qualifications, either completed or being completed, is needed, as are basic skills in learning technology and resource development and management. Experience in working with children is essential.

2. Teaching and Learning

Chinese EA’s primary duty is to help students learn. It is performed mainly through direct support to students in classroom and, where appropriate, through assistance in resource development and management as a small part of his or her overall responsibilities. Directed by the Chinese teacher of a particular class or Head of Chinese, a Chinese EA shall

·  be familiar with the Chinese curriculum, methods of teaching and assessment and the school’s daily routine;

·  understand age specific characteristics of learning, particularly those associated with language learning and acquisition;

·  provide assistance to students for effective learning, e.g. clarifying instructions, answering questions, helping with equipment and motivating students;

·  take group activities such as oral practice, differentiated writing tasks, guided reading and group projects, but not the whole class;

·  provide individual assistance to any students who may need it;

·  help maintain discipline or complete class routines during, before or after a class;

·  mark students’ work set by himself or herself.

·  report to students’ progress and any related information to Chinese teacher;

3. Planning

·  plan lessons together with Chinese teacher and other EAs;

·  participate in departmental planning or year level planning;

·  plan own lessons or student activities where appropriate as directed by the department;

4. Communication and Collaboration

·  work collaboratively with teachers and Head of Department;

·  be a team player who is willing to share idea and resources and who is ready to offer help;

·  communicate with colleagues courteously to maintain a harmonic working relationship with them;

·  communicate with students effectively and assertively when necessary;

·  help promote school mission;

5. Administrative and Other Duties (no more than 15%)

·  play a role in the development, production and management of resources;

·  perform administrative tasks such as filing, photocopying, mounting display, etc;

·  contribute to major Chinese events such as the Chinese New Year celebration;

·  supply teach where the Chinese EA holds formal teaching qualification;

·  roster for yard duties of the school;

·  perform other duties designated by school or the Chinese Department.
