How to create a Cornell Note Template with a Kick using a Table in Microsoft Word
Kofa is an AVID school which means we incorporate the AVID philosophy in all that we do. Cornell Notes are by all students and not all students are happy about this. So I allow just a little personality to their notes and it makes all the difference in the classroom.

I use this simple task at the start of the year to introduce terms like tabs, groups, columns, vertical, rows, horizontal, insertion points, cursor etc…

Insert a Table

  1. Click where you want to insert a table.
  2. On the Insert tab, in the Tables group, click Table, and then click Insert Table.
  1. Under Table size, enter the number of columns and rows.
  2. For a Cornell Note, you will need 2 columns and 3 rows.
  3. Using your mouse, click and drag the center vertical line to the left so it will look like the image on the white board.
  4. Now let’s move the 2nd horizontal up again trying to match the image on the board.
  5. Now we will do the same for the 3rd horizontal line.
  6. Your file should now look similar to this.

So this is the point where the students get to “kick it up a notch”. A true Cornell Note does not have the space at the top of the left column or the bottom of the left column. Student can now go online and find an image that motivates them or makes them happy and after you teach them how to save images in their created folders, they can add am image to the top left corner. I then follow up with a textbox on the bottom left corner where they add a motivational phrase.

9. Save files as Template_CN
