Weekly Buzz Newsletter

Room A4 – Mrs. Briscoe

v  Beginning Monday, first grade students will begin to bring home books to read as part of their homework. Students are to read the assigned story (1-3 times). These books are to be returned the next school day. They are very precious to us and we do not want them to become lost or damaged.

v  First grade students will also begin bringing home high frequency words/word cards from the stories we read each week. These words will be listed on “Teddy’s Too-Good-To-Miss Word List.” Please save the word cards in a Ziploc bag or other container and continue to review them each week. Sample word games were sent home on Back to School Night in the packet. Students are expected to be able to read these words. If they are already able to read them, then they can begin learning to spell the words.

v  Homework – First grade students receive daily homework and it is due the net day. Kindergarten students receive a packet on Monday, which is due on Friday.

v  Incomplete assignments or assignments needing corrections can be sent back to school after your child completes/corrects it. It is not necessary to return all incomplete/corrected assignments, unless they are stamped “please correct and return.”

v  First grade students are encouraged to work on IXL at home. Kindergarten students do not have an IXL account yet. A big shout out goes to Cooper for 40 minutes of IXL time spent last week. Yeah!

v  Do you want to volunteer to help in our class, but haven’t found a day or time that works for you? I am looking for a volunteer to travel to the library with the first grade students on Thursdays from 9:10-9:40. During this time you will be responsible to help the students select appropriate books, with the help of our Librarian, Kelley Mills. I am also looking for a volunteer to work Thursday mornings to help get the Thursday envelopes ready to go home.

v  You will be receiving this newsletter each week. The newsletter will also be posted on the class webpage. If you scroll down to the bottom of the webpage, you can sign up to be automatically notified every time a new newsletter has been posted.

v  It is now time for the first grade students to turn in their 10 daily class message slips and kindergarten - 10 behavior cards. Please staple/clip the 10 slips/cards together before sending them to school. Kindergarten students need to have a name on one of the cards and a parent signature.

v  Book orders are due on Friday, September 9. The orders went home on Back-to-School Night. Visit www.scholastic.com/bookclubs and once on the parent page click the “Register” button on the “First time here?” link, then register for your own username and password. When prompted, enter the one-time Class Activation Code: GRN6K. This code ensures that your order is sent to me.

v  Suggested Classroom Donations: ABC letter stickers
