Youth Employment Coordinator

The Youth Employment Coordinator (YEC) will work collaboratively with the Our Place Peel staff team and community organizations in running the Employment Services for youth aged 16-24 in the Region of Peel.

The YEC will provide employment supports to youth aged 16-24 years old who are social assistance recipients, youth who are living in the shelter or youth living in the community who are at risk homelessness.

Required duties include employability assessments, group pre-employment training, labour market information, job retention and vocational counseling.

This is a full time position (40 hrs/week) with the flexibility to work evenings and weekends.

DUTIES, RESPONSIBILITIES AND RELATED TASKS:

Programing

  • Assess client’s employability/job readiness by determining employment barriers, reviewing employment history and identifying a client’s career goals and skills. Assists clients in developing an individualized employment plan.
  • Provides support to clients in the development of job training plans, job search skills, resume writing, interview skills and referrals to agencies as appropriate.
  • Develop and implement marketing and outreach strategy to employers.Liaise with community professionals and employers to explore and develop competitive and customized employment opportunities based on individual skills and abilities.
  • Plan and organize job fairs, information sessions, and employer presentations on a regular basis. Provide employment preparation and employability group sessions and individual resource centre support when required.
  • Determines appropriateness for employment programs and makes recommendations and referrals to other resources or services within the community, to help meet the client’s needs.
  • Liaises with Employment Development Specialists to expedite the process of matching employers with job ready clients.
  • Advises and refers clients to competitive paid employment and unpaid work/skill training programs, internships, subsidized employment programs and competitive employment opportunities.
  • Monitors clients in employment and unpaid work placements to ensure program requirements are met. Provides job coaching support when required. Advocates on behalf of clients, community organizations and employers as needed to assist with coaching and job maintenance supports. Oversee training plan development and conduct on-going follow up to ensure successful employment outcomes for program participants.
  • Develops and organizes strategic group programming, training modules, networking groups, and information seminars.

Administration

  • Updates and maintains confidential and complete client records.
  • Assists in maintaining the programs database by entering data, generating reports, supporting analysis, and regular auditing of data integrity. Prepares a month end report regarding activity which includes program statistics, program expenses and other reports as assigned.
  • Determines eligibility of ongoing payments of mandatory and discretionary benefits and employment related expense.
  • Participates on committees and task forces with other agencies addressing issues facing youth.
  • As an employee of Our Place Peel, abides by all the policies and procedures of the agency. Has a knowledge of and ability to carry out all safety requirements and emergency procedures.
  • Performs additional administrative functions as required.

Qualifications:

  • University Degree preferred or College Diploma in Careers Planning, Employment Counselling, Social/Community Work, Social Services, Human Resources and/or related field.
  • 3-5 years of experience in in job development, employer outreach, and/or employment counseling. An equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered.
  • Commitment to working in a socially inclusive environment responding with sensitivity and personal awareness to the diverse needs of members including visible and non-visible dimensions of diversity.
  • Flexibility regarding assigned working hours, including occasional evenings and weekends
  • Knowledge of community resources, familiarity with the labour market as well as apprenticeship and training opportunities
  • Knowledge of the issues that lead young people to become homeless, and an ability to work with youth in a respectful, non-judgmental and consistent mannerExcellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Thorough understanding of labor market information and trends
  • Demonstrated ability to work as a member of a team
  • Strong organizational, planning, and time management skills
  • Ability to facilitate group activities
  • Ability to be flexible with schedule
  • Valid Ontario driver license/access to a vehicle, approved first aid and clear criminal record search are required.
