Highlights:

RIKUGIEN GARDEN

Around 300 years old, Rikugien is known as Tokyo’s most beautiful landscaped garden. Designed by Yoshiyasu Yanagisawa, Rikugien literally means “the six poems garden.” This strolling, mountain and pond-style garden’s creation was based on the theme of Waka poetry in the 15th year of the Genroku Period (1702). The garden’s various elements portray a total of 88 miniature scenes from famous Japanese poems.

Rikugien is a typical example of the famous gardens of the Edo Period. In the Meiji Period, this garden became a second residence of the founder of Mitsubishi, Iwasaki Yataro. Later, in the 13th year of Showa (1938), the Iwasaki family donated this garden to the City of Tokyo, and in Showa 28 (1953) it was designated as a special site of exceptional beauty and an important cultural asset. Rikugien is quite spacious with a central pond, islands, forested areas, man-made hills, and teahouses.

EDO TOKYO MUSEUM

The Edo Tokyo Museum provides a fascinating and imaginative look at the historical heritage of Tokyo. The impressive collection takes visitors on a journey from the roots of the old settlement of Edo, through the closed-country Tokugawa/Edo period, and the modernizing Meiji era, to present day Tokyo, a global Metropolis. The museum includes life-sized models, replicas, artifacts, and dioramas chronicling the somewhat tumultuous history of Tokyo. Through painstaking investigation and research, they have created realistic representations of the originals. You’ll certainly enjoy and learn a lot through this vivid portrayal of Tokyo through the centuries.
