Chapter Members,

Wow! What a great way to continue 2016. Our speaker and his topic likely had a great deal to influence the attendance, which I will get to shortly. It never ceases to amaze me that just when we need someone to step up it miraculously just happens! This month we are very happy to welcome Rhona (short “o”) Davis to the group. She is transferring down from the Birmingham Chapter and has volunteered to take the vacant Vice Chair position. She is chomping at the bit to make exciting things happen for us here in the Mobile Chapter. Please welcome & thank her for standing up and getting involved. As you know, it takes people willing to get involved and take on a bit of responsibility to keep the chapter running, so we thank her. More importantly it takes a dedicated group of members and guests for the chapter to thrive; please consider helping out when requested.

If you haven’t already renewed your membership please do so as soon as possible. You can contact ASIS Member Services if you have any questions by email , or by phone at +1.703.519.6200, 09:00-17:00 EST, Mondaythrough Friday. The Mobile Chapter is only 42 Member strong. Many think it’s because we allow guests to continue to attend on a permanent basis. We value our guest’s participation and have no plans to change the current policy. However, please understand that our members do pay $195.00 per year to remain members. That is why the policy changed this year whereby we no longer collect a meeting fee from members as they’ve already paid. Guests, we hope you will understand this and if it’s something you feel strongly about, please ask one of us for a membership application and join us. Most employers will take up the cost of ASIS membership. Give it a try, yours might cover it for you. Last year we had a speaker from Siemens come in from Philadelphia. He said they have about 400 members and about the same turnout that we get. So I definitely think we are doing something right. Consider joining and then getting board certified in one of three certification programs. We are now getting our meetings accredited (when we can) meaning attendance goes toward future recertification. The more people we have the greater the results of our collective work will be, so what are you waiting for – join ASIS now.

Joshua did an excellent job getting the meeting started with the Pledge of Allegiance, Prayer, and introducing our new Vice Chair, Rhona. Rhona then did an excellent job introducing our speaker.

We had a great turnout with 27 people in attendance, the topic was very informative, the speaker was extremely knowledgeable on CCTV Systems, and those who need certification CEUs received 1 for the day since we were able to get ASIS to accredit the presentation. We’re committed this year to seek accreditation for all of our presentations. So if you attend every month for three years, you will have half the credits you need for recertification simply by attending. Take a look at which organizations were represented at the February meeting: Mobile Gas, Hunt Refining, Baldwin Co. EMA, Vision Security Technologies, Teklinks, Dupont, Gulf Power, Meridian US, Tophat Consulting, CSX, US DHS, E.C. First, Mobile Police Department, Mobile County EMA, US Coast Guard, US Army Corps of Engineers, Alabama Power, US Army Special Forces. We want to thank everyone for participating and making this the best ASIS Chapter on the Gulf Coast!

We’ve been meeting at the Don Carlos restaurant for over five years now. It was evident with the smooth transition from service to collecting money to providing receipts that they know what we want from them. Like clockwork! This might be a good time to inform our readers that one of our members used a credit card for payment about three months ago and the card was later being used in Columbia. Our resident IT experts all agree that it could have happened several ways, many of them not including an insider job. If you do not feel comfortable giving them your CC to go charge the meal, simply go with them to pay your bill. We do not feel any of the employees misused the card information because as I mentioned it’s been five years now and never had a problem in the past.

Prior to this month’s meeting,your officer’s met to discuss future progress and initiatives. Some of the items discussed:

Should we purchase a laptop for the chapter?

-Pros:

NO longer have to ask our speakers to bring their own laptop
Don’t have to coordinate which officer will bring a laptop
Won’t have to worry about transferring viruses to officer’s personal laptops

-Cons:

Chapter laptop may become infected with viruses and transfer to speaker
Cost $$$

Should we expend $ on a monthly basis to upkeep the web site (currently only in a very basic level where posting information at best is possible).

-Pros:

The possibilities of what we can use the website for are endless based on the amount of $$ we spend

-Cons:

Cost $$
Lose the personal touch of sending invitations out to individual’s email inboxes
In the last five years we’ve eliminated nearly all of our revenue streams

OldBusiness:

Test for one year a pilot whereby ASIS members will not pay meeting fees. Justification for this is that ASIS members pay $195 annual membership fees to remain members & we want our guests to have an incentive to join our ranks as well.
During introductions at the monthly meetings we ask that everyone discuss potential job openings
When possible, we will attempt to get accreditation for all future presentations
Align 2016 presentations with the primary ASIS CPP Certification topics (Security Principles and Practices, Business Principles and Practices, Investigations, Personal Security, Physical Security, Information Security, Crisis Management, and Legal Aspects—see annual presentation schedule below)
Hold an ASIS Membership drive in 2016 with an ASIS speaker coming in/free lunch for our guests
Conduct another day long physical security course with Jeff Dingle.
Design a basic Chapter web site; Glenda can do this for the chapter at no cost.

As you can see, we want to hold a membership drive this year but we don’t think it will be next month. Our goal was to bring in someone who is well versed in ASIS benefits as our speaker. Do any of our members feel like they are knowledgeable enough to make a presentation on ASIS? Could we possibly get a few of our life members to assist? Please let one of the officers know if you are willing to help out with this. We only have a little over 40 members and I fear some of those are not going to renew their memberships. We should focus on gaining new members and we will need to show them exactly why they should join.We’d like to provide free lunch to all guests at this meeting so please begin to figure out who you might be able to bring! And as part of the drive any member who can sign up three new members to ASIS will get a $50 gift card and anyone that signs up five new members will have their annual dues paid for by the Chapter – that’s a $195.00 value!
