Meeting Minutes

October 11, 2012

Present: Nancy Bui (Asst. Principal); Luti Canosa, Quiana Hawkins, Chandra McDuffy, Carlos Corral, and Michele Alvares-Campos (Parents)

Attendance / From the 48 parents who attended the meeting last month, only four parents present at this months meeting – not all parents have access to computers / Request to switch time with SSC.
Create a poster sign (English & Spanish) and post at the entrance for parents to see when students are being dropped-off and picked-up.
Send meeting notice to students take home to their parents.
Parent Volunteer / 25 parents signed up to volunteer – only 8 parents turned in their volunteer agreement form / ·  Any parents who want to volunteer need to complete Volunteer Information/ Agreement.
·  Send form to the students for parents to sign and bring back to school.

Entrances (in JLHS have posted guards)
Lover’s lane
Before school (8AM- 8:35 AM) & after school monitors (2:50 PM – 3:30 PM?)
Lunch monitor
Hallway monitors / Need parent volunteers to supervise students at these locations and during these times.
Shake-out Earthquake Drill – October 16 @ 10 AM / Need parent volunteers to participate in the drill i.e pick up their kids.
Need to sign-up with the front receptionist (Maryanne) – 1 day pass.
Students to make posters
Student Behavior and Conduct / Student handbook and Planner contain information on proper student behavior and conduct.
Students need to speak up and tell an adult.
Student concern being labeled as a “SNITCH” – fear of retaliation.
Teachers sending mixed message – students being told to deal with it themselves. / Encourage students to report in writing (anonymously)
Provide a secure box at the counselors’ office where students can drop “Problem/Concern” forms.
Form must have checked boxes related to homework, conduct, home and other problems or concern so that students will not be afraid if other students can see them drop a form in the box..
Messing around/ horse playing (shoving/pushing) – need to stop / School will actually suspend a student from school if identified as a bully.
Need to meet parents defending kids who were being called out for inappropriate behavior / Contact Union City for certified programs available.
Provide food at the meeting.
Low Teacher Morale / Parents coming to the teacher lounge yelling at teachers during their lunch. / Staff appreciation activities – Q. Hawkins will try to put something together
