SYLLABUS

TEACHER: Mr. Bell

COURSE/GRADE LEVEL: Grade 6 Advanced Mathematics

This advanced course, designed for students who have exhibited a strength and advanced ability in mathematics, covers the grade 6 Massachusetts Curriculum frameworks at an accelerated pace with more depth and complexity. Concepts and standards from higher grade levels are introduced. Students move toward independence while solving multi-step problems requiring higher order thinking. Students engage in more abstract applications and make connections to other disciplines.

INSTRUCTIONAL MATERIALS

Learning materials in the classroom promote the application of mathematical concepts.

The Big Ideas text book and various other appropriate materials are used in the classroom.

Grade 6 Standards

Ratios and Proportional Relationships

• Understand ratio concepts and use ratio

reasoning to solve problems.

The Number System

• Apply and extend previous understandings of

multiplication and division to divide fractions

by fractions.

• Compute fluently with multi-digit numbers and

find common factors and multiples.

• Apply and extend previous understandings of

numbers to the system of rational numbers.

Expressions and Equations

• Apply and extend previous understandings of

arithmetic to algebraic expressions.

• Reason about and solve one-variable equations

and inequalities.

• Represent and analyze quantitative

relationships between dependent and

independent variables.

Geometry

• Solve real-world and mathematical problems

involving area, surface area, and volume.

Statistics and Probability

• Develop understanding of statistical variability.

• Summarize and describe distributions.

HOMEWORK EXPECTATIONS

Homework is generally assigned 4 nights per week. In keeping with Quincy’s policies, the assignments are designed to take between 15-20 minutes each, but the length of time spent will depend on the individual student.

GRADING POLICY

At the end of the term, the final grade is based on an average of tests, quizzes, class participation, homework, and classwork.

MAKEUP PROCEDURE

If a student is absent from class for a day, the student can have a “homework buddy” get it, or call the homework hotline. The student might need an extra day to complete the assignment. If the student is absent for a longer period of time, the work can be collected and a time frame can be decided upon. If a student does poorly and wishes to retake a quiz or test, the test or quiz must be signed first and the retesting time and date will be announced (usually before school). Tests and quizzes cannot be retaken in term 3.

GENERAL INFORMATION

Students are expected to come to class with the necessary materials and be prepared to work. The math book, a math folder, homework notebook or binder, agenda, and pencil should be brought to class daily unless otherwise directed.

*Adjustments may be made in this syllabus to meet student needs.
