CRIMINOLOGY AND CRIMINAL JUSTICE MAJORS’ CHECKLIST

HAVE YOU…

ü  Updated your contact information in MyRed and checked for messages?

ü  Submitted your application for a scholarship if eligible (announced early Spring)?

ü  Got involved with a student organization like the Criminal Justice Student Association?

ü  Applied for Alpha Phi Sigma--minimum 45 hours, 3.2 GPA (both cumulative and Criminal Justice courses)?

ü  Applied for upper division (if you have a minimum of 45 earned credit hours and completed these courses)?

o  CRIM 101, 251 and 6-9 hours of 203, 211 or 221.

o  MATH 100A or higher

o  Completed 6 hours of Composition

ü  Developed a mentor relationship with one of your CRCJ professors for future references?

ü  Met with a Career Services advisor for assistance with your resume, job hunting or applying for graduate school?

IN PREPARATION FOR YOUR NEXT TERM, HAVE YOU…

ü  Sent transcripts for transferred credits from other institutions (dual, advanced placement, IB, summer courses)?

ü  Cleared all registration holds? You cannot register for future classes if these holds are present: Financial, Advising, Library, Parking, and Transcripts.

ü  Checked when you can enroll in MyRed? Your appointment time to enroll in MyRED is noted under the Enrollment Tab and in your Messages. Registration appointment times are assigned approximately two weeks before the beginning of priority registration. Your appointment time determines the earliest that you may actually enroll for classes in MyRED. You can put classes in your shopping cart before your appointment time but you cannot process any ADD transactions until your appointment. Appointments are based on class levels (EARNED credit hours) and within levels are randomly distributed: Graduate Students(enroll first), Seniors (89 hours+), Juniors (53-88), Sophomores (27-52), Freshmen (0-26).

ü  Made your advising appointment in Canvas’s MyPlan (about 2-3 weeks before you are eligible to register for class)?

ü  Determined your special requirements, e.g, Foreign Language Deficiency (need 2 years in a foreign language equivalent to completing 101 & 102), learning communities, financial aid, Honors Program, ROTC 4 year plan, scholarships, eligibility for Student Support Services (SSS) or other special programs,

ü  Ran a My Degree Audit in MyRed to determine what requirements you still need to complete? Before you meet with your advisor, think about what classes you are interested in taking to include some alternatives in case your first choices conflict in your schedule. After you enroll in classes, wait 24 hours and then run another Degree Audit to ensure you are taking the right courses for the requirements. Contact your advisor with any questions.

BEFORE YOU ENROLL IN CLASSES, HAVE YOU…

ü  Checked the Catalog for course information (prerequisites, ACE, cross listed courses)? If you are considering a Sociology class, please note that credit in the degree can only be earned in one of the following:

o  SOCI 205 or CRIM 251 Research Methods

o  SOCI 311 or CRIM 337 Juvenile Delinquency.

o  SOCI 474 or CRIM 413 Sociology of Deviant Behavior.

ü  Ensured you are not duplicating a course taken at another college? Check the transfer equivalency website.

ü  Checked with your advisor and instructor before selecting Pass/No Pass (P/N) grading option. UNL grades policy indicates that you must get a C or above to receive grade of P. There are restrictions for the CRCJ major (only a few classes, e.g. CRIM 397, CRIM 499 are P/N) and restrictions for most UNL minors.

IF YOU ARE IN THE UPPER DIVISION, HAVE YOU…

ü  Declared a concentration? Added optional minors? Check the undergraduate catalog for minor requirements.

ü  Completed CRIM 335 and CRIM 351 and have a plan for ACE and other requirements (ACE 8 and ACE 9)?

ü  Planned your ACE 10 requirement, e.g. applied for an Internship. The alternative course is CRIM 496.

ü  Signed up for CRIM 499 (Senior Assessment) in your final semester? Course takes about an hour and is 0 credits.
