Purpose

This is a stranded qualification for people who are involved in racing operations.

The TAB Retail Strand is for people who are employed in a TAB retail outlet carrying out thoroughbred, harness, and greyhound racing retail duties. These people will have the skills to operate the TAB retail outlet in a partially supervised role. They will also have knowledge of thoroughbred, harness, and greyhound racing and racing operations; the structure and functions of the New Zealand Racing Board; maintaining a safe and secure environment for people in the hospitality industry; problem gambling in a Race Act gambling establishment; workplace health and safety; and time and stress management.

The elective allows people to select additional skills applicable to their own work situation, or personal and professional development, such as TAB retail administration, marketing and interpersonal communications.

The Raceday Control Strand is for people who coordinate on course betting systems, using a betting system administration terminal. These people will have the skills to coordinate an on-course betting system in a partially supervised role; apply problem solving techniques; manage interpersonal conflict; collaborate in a group or team; and listen to gain information. They will also have knowledge of thoroughbred, harness, and greyhound racing and racing operations; the structure and functions of the New Zealand Racing Board; maintaining a safe and secure environment for people in the hospitality industry; problem gambling in a Race Act gambling establishment; workplace health and safety; and time and stress management.

On completion of either strand people can progress to generic management qualifications such as the National Certificate in Business (Small Business Management) [Ref: 0172], or the National Certificate in Business (First Line Management) (Level 4) [Ref:0649].
