A HOUSE RESOLUTION
TO COMMEND AND CONGRATULATE LARRY PENLEY, HEAD COACH OF THE CLEMSON UNIVERSITY GOLF TEAM, FOR AN OUTSTANDING NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP SEASON AND FOR BEING NAMED THE NATIONAL COACH OF THE YEAR BY THE GOLF COACH’S ASSOCIATION.
Whereas, Head Coach Larry Penley has had an outstanding career both as a golf player and coach at Clemson University; and
Whereas, Larry Penley came to Clemson University after graduating with high school AllAmerican honors from North Gaston Senior High in Callas, North Carolina. His senior year at Clemson, he was voted AllACC with a spring stroke average of 72.66, which still ranks in the top ten in Clemson history; and
Whereas, continuing in the game of golf after Clemson, Coach Penley played in several minitour events. He has won the South Carolina state amateur twice, the South Carolina MidAmateur, and the Carolina Golf Association MidAmateur by five shots; and
Whereas, Coach Penley began his coaching career in 1982 at Clemson when he became the assistant golf coach and was offered the head coaching position after the 1983 season. Since taking over, all of his squads have concluded their seasons at the NCAA Tournament, a twentyyear record that is the second longest streak in the nation; and
Whereas, this season Coach Penley was named the National Coach of the Year by the Golf Coach’s Association, the NCAA District Coach of the Year, and the ACC Coach of the Year for the sixth time; and
Whereas, Coach Penley’s exceptional coaching record includes fiftyfour tournament championships, seven ACC Championships, six NCAA East Regional titles, and more regional titles than any other coach in the nation. He has coached twentysix first, second, or third team AllAmerican players, including three in 2003; and
Whereas, Larry Penley is married to the former Heidi Grove, and they have three children, Andrew William, Mollie Ashton, and Kelsey Lou; and
Whereas, the members of the House of Representatives are pleased to recognize such an outstanding South Carolinian as Coach Larry Penley of Clemson University. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:
That the members of the House of Representatives of the State of South Carolina, by this resolution, commend and congratulate Larry Penley, Head Coach of the Clemson University Golf Team, for an outstanding National Championship season and for being named the National Coach of the Year by the Golf Coach’s Association.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to Head Coach Larry Penley of Clemson University.
