GESS ELEMENTARY
TEACH, LOVE, RESPECT, AND PROTECT ONE ANOTHER
Dear 6th Grade Parents, 19 November 2014
There has been a change to the scheduled Christmas Concert- the new date is as follows:
Wednesday, December 17th, 2014
Jenkins High School Café
7:00 PM
Despite our best efforts to arrange around the various groups in the school, the high school had a Varsity/Jr. Varsity Basketball game scheduled on Tuesday night, requiring a change for our concert. Please accept my apologies as I know I just sent you the date last week.
To ensure that you all received this letter, please sign on the bottom of this letter so that I don’t have anyone show up on the wrong night. The rest of this letter is as before:
Several weeks have passed since your students began learning to play their band instrument, and I hope you have heard their great progress so far! Your student should be able to play several songs for you out of their book (and you should be able to recognize them too!). If your student has not brought their instrument home, please continue to encourage them to do so. You can then hear them play it, and they get the extra practice time that they need. It’s reasonable to expect 15 – 20 minutes of practice time, a few days per week. Also, if your student still needs a book (Accent on Achievement, book 1), please get them one so I can have my loaners back for next year’s class.
Please encourage your family and friends to attend and support your student. The concert will be about an hour in length and will include the Jenkins Jr High 7/8 Grade Band as well as the Jenkins Sr High School Band and the JHS Jazz Band. We will also be doing a dessert social afterwards. Please bring a dessert to share and the Chewelah Music Boosters will help to coordinate utensils, etc.
The dress for the concert will include our Gess 6th Grade Band tee shirts purchased last year. They are black and will be given to the students as a loaner uniform prior to the concert. In addition to this shirt, please help your student to dress in black below the waist, to include black socks and dress shoes if possible. Girls may elect to wear skirts, but they must be longer than knee length (they are sitting and playing on a raised stage). Also, since it’s the Christmas season, your students can add to their uniform some Christmas cheer like a Santa hat or reindeer antlers, etc. I will just tell the kids to make sure they can still play while all ‘dressed in the season.’
In closing, thank you for the opportunity to teach your students. Also, don’t forget band when Christmas shopping- new music of popular songs from movies, better quality reeds, instrument maintenance items and recordings of famous musicians playing your student’s instrument are great Christmas gift ideas! Feel free to call me with any questions on your student’s participation in the band program.
Sincerely,
Joe Trudeau
