A HOUSE RESOLUTION
TO RECOGNIZE AND HONOR THE CARDINAL NEWMAN HIGH SCHOOL BOYS VARSITY SOCCER TEAM, COACHES, AND SCHOOL OFFICIALS FOR AN OUTSTANDING SEASON AND TO CONGRATULATE THEM FOR WINNING THE 2014 SOUTH CAROLINA INDEPENDENT SCHOOL ASSOCIATION CLASS AAA STATE CHAMPIONSHIP TITLE.
Whereas, the South Carolina House of Representatives is pleased to learn that the members of the Cardinal Newman boys varsity soccer team took top honors at the state competition at Heathwood Hall Episcopal School in Columbia on Saturday, May 10, 2014; and
Whereas, for the second year in a row and the third time in four years, the Cardinal Newman High School Cardinals have returned from the championship game, hoisting the winner’s trophy for their school; and
Whereas, to the delight of their fans, the Cardinals defeated the Porter Gaud School Cyclones 21 in the state contest; and
Whereas, finishing with a 1783 season for 2014, Head Coach Will Eudy brought home the fourth state title since he took over the Cardinal’s soccer program in 2006; and
Whereas, the resilient Cardinals maintained their composure during the nailbiting state contest. Cardinal Newman’s Harrison Lapin helped his teammates to their first goal eleven minutes into play, and the Cyclones did not respond until the well into the second half; and
Whereas, with less than nine minutes to play, the Cardinals launched a team effort to regain the lead, starting with a perfect throwin up the midfield’s right sideline from Cam Parker, who raced to pick up the ball, sending it into the attacking zone. Harrison Lapin ran the ball down without defensive pressure in the right corner and sent a centering pass to his brother and teammate, Max Lapin, in the middle of the box, who quickly passed it to Cardinal’s Jack Herbkersman who broke in unmarked from the left side to score the team’s most significant goal of the year; and
Whereas, although PorterGaud kept up the pressure, the Cyclones failed to score another goal after Cardinal Newman posted the 21 lead; and
Whereas, in a sport that demands strength, speed, and agility, Coach Will Eudy and his skilled coaching staff capitalized on their own athletic ability and training to forge a championship team and teach these athletes lessons that will prove invaluable throughout their lives; and
Whereas, the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives appreciate the pride and recognition that the Cardinal Newman soccer players have brought to their school and their community and look to hear of their continued accomplishments in future seasons. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:
That the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives, by this resolution, recognize and honor the Cardinal Newman High School boys varsity soccer team, coaches, and school officials for an outstanding season and congratulate them for winning the 2014 South Carolina Independent School Association Class AAA State Championship title.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to Principal Jacqualine Kasprowski and Coach Will Eudy.
