I.  November 22, 2013: Call to Order – Dr. Richard Miller

Called to order at 8:45 a.m.

II.  ATTENDANCE – Richard Miller

Those in attendance were Richard Miller, Gordon Baylis, Nielsen Pereira, Michelle Hollis, Hajara Mahmood, Aaron Hughey, Tracey Moore, Monica Burke, Melvin Watson, Jessica Staten, Keith Sylvester, Pam Herriford, Huda Melky, Finley Woodard, Andrea Garr-Barnes, Mark Reeves, Kristin Wilson, and Cindy Smith.

III.  APPROVAL OF MINUTES

Minutes from the October 11, 2013 meeting were reviewed and approved. Dr. Miller reminded committee members that all DEC meeting minutes and agendas are posted on the DEC website and can be reviewed at any time.

Dr. Miller introduced Dr. Kristin Wilson, Associate Professor of Educational Administration, Leadership and Research.

IV.  THREE YEAR MINORITY STUDENT ENROLLMENT UPDATE

A.  Dr. Miller discussed the enrollment data at length and shared with the group that WKU has lost a significant number of Kentucky students.

B.  Dr. Miller announced that the KY Plan report card has been delayed for one year.

V.  SREB MINORITY FACULTY RECRUITMENT

A.  Dr. Miller, Andrea Garr-Barnes, Monica Burke, Cheryl Stevens and Tina Peterson attended the SREB Minority Faculty Recruitment event from October 31 – November 2, 2013 in Arlington, Virginia.

B.  Dr. Miller reported that 50 institutions were represented and 58 individuals signed in at the WKU table. Dr. Miller shared these contacts with the Deans and Department Heads.

C.  Dr. Miller discussed incentives to recruit more minority faculty to WKU.

VI.  OIDI REPORT

A.  Andrea Garr-Barnes discussed the launching of the Social Justice Colloquium Series.

VII.  SPRING 2014 STUDENT CAMPUS CLIMATE SURVEY

A.  Dr. Miller met with Aaron Hughey, Monica Burke, and Betsy Shoenfelt to discuss how to maximize student participation in the Campus Climate Survey. Betsy is concerned with the length of the survey and she is looking into reducing it.

B.  Dr. Miller discussed incentives for students to complete the survey. It has been decided that names of participants will be entered into a drawing for textbook vouchers, Big Red dollars, or a $500 Scholarship.

VIII.  2014 MLK CALENDAR: WKU FEATURES

A.  Dr. Miller announced that there will be several WKU employees featured in the 2014 MLK calendar.

IX.  MINORITY FORUM

A.  Dr. Miller reported that there has been $40,000 set aside for minority students who wish to travel abroad. The application process is being structured and will be ready for spring or summer 2014.

X.  OUTSTANDING BLACK GRADUATES

A.  Dr. Miller reminded the committee that the Outstanding Black Graduates’ Ceremony will be held Friday, December 13, 2013 at 6 p.m. at DSU.
