(BNU) and the Public Hospitals Authority (PHA), the BNU requested that the PHA's In Service Training Awards website publication should be edited as the current format was not user friendly.
Consequently, and after a review of the website, amendments were made and the following information pertaining to the In-Service Training Awards will be posted on the PHA's website as indicated below:
Public Hospitals Authority's In-Service Training Awards:
In-Service Training Awards may include study leave with or without salary. Other benefits may be considered in relation to the level of priority and also on the basis of availability of funds and other special circumstances. The component benefits and allowances that are generally considered for In-Service Awards are noted below:
Full In-Service Training Award

Eligibility for an In-Service Training Award:
• Be an employee of the Public Hospitals Authority,
• Be a Bahamian citizen,
• Be of permanent and/or pensionable employee status,
• Occupy a full-time position,
• Have been confirmed in their appointment (s) for at least three (3) years,
• Possess above average performance appraisal(s) for the preceding three (3) years,
• In addition to bullets 1 - 4, non-Bahamians on contract will be considered for unpaid study leave for a maximum of six (6) months once written confirmation is obtained from the Head of the Department advising that the leave will not adversely affect services in the area the employee is deployed; in this case the gratuity of non-Bahamians who are granted unpaid study leave will be reduced accordingly,
• Have been accepted and/or enrolled in an accredited program of study that qualifies as a priority training need as determined by the Public Hospitals Authority,
• Possess academic certification or credentials of an appropriate level for the program to be pursued
Criteria/Conditions of the Award
Persons applying for Educational Assistance and/or an In-Service Award must be prepared to agree to prerequisite conditions, if approval to such request is granted by the Public Hospitals Authority:
• Agree to meet the conditions of the award, namely, to be a bonded employee of the Public Hospitals Authority, to work for a period of time not less than the period of study leave and to the extent of the full value of the award as determined by the Public Hospitals Authority
• Sign the Bond Agreement prior to departure for study leave
• Agree to repay all monies expended for failure to discharge bond obligations
• Increments will not accrue while on In-Service Training Award
Full details of the Public Hospitals Authority's Educational Assistance/In-Service Awards Policy are available in the Human Resources Training and Development Departments at Corporate Office and the Institutions.
Note: Failure to meet any of the conditions (expressed or implied) may result in suspension and/or termination of the award or coding of salary at the discretion of the Authority.
The Public Hospitals Authority's consideration and granting of In-Service Training awards are restricted to the aforementioned benefits as provided under the Educational Assistance/In-Service Awards Policy.
