5th Annual Dia de los Muertos Citywide Festival 2016

Topeka, KS - The Tonantzin Society will be holding the 5th annual Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) Festival from October 7 – November 2. The festival is a month long celebration taking place throughout the city of Topeka. The beloved Mexican holiday remembers and celebrates the lives of our deceased loved ones by embracing the arts in a myriad of ways and encourages community members to participate.

“This is our 5th year and we’re planning some exciting activities to help celebrate this major milestone!” said director, Christina Valdivia-Alcala. The annual juried art show will open on First Friday and officially kick-off the festival. The call for art is in its 4th year of reaching out to artists across the nation. This year the exhibit will be held in the NOTO Arts District at the Haven Arts Gallery, 837 ½ N. Kansas Ave.

The Tonantzin Society is all-volunteer and work tirelessly around the year with events and partnerships in Topeka schools aligned with the Society’s mission of bringing awareness to Latino art, culture & with focus on advocacy. The citywide Dia de los Muertos festival is the group’s largest and widely attended event, with the family Street Fair, held in the NOTO Arts District expecting a number of new activities and will be held on October 8. Additionally the judges for this years art show are Celeste de Luna a printmaker/painter and arts educator from the Rio Grande Valley, Texas. Second judge is José Faus, native of Bogota, Colombia and has lived in Kansas City, Missouri for over a decade. He is a writer, visual artist and independent teacher. Top award for first place in the art show is $500 and 2nd place is $250.
