Starbright Children’s Development Centre Association is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to serving children and families in the Central Okanagan. Our mission is to support the growth and development of children with exceptional developmental needs through early intervention services, and empower to their families through information and education to meet the immediate, transitional, and long-term needs of their child.
A volunteer Board of Directors governs the organization, and works with the Executive Director who is responsible for the operation of the Centre. The board membership consists of both parents and community members.
Since 1966 Starbright (formerly known as the COCDA) has provided therapeutic and support services to children through:

Starbright is family- centered and community-based. Our dedicated staff and services are responsive to community diversity. Families participate on a voluntary basis.
Starbright Children’s Development Centre is registered BC society. Families become members of the society when their child becomes a client.
ACCESSING SERVICE
Referrals for the services of Starbright professionals come from a variety of sources: physicians, specialists, public health nurses, social workers, community-based organizations, and family members of the child. Anyone may refer.
Referrals are made by those concerned that a child may be demonstrating developmental concerns, be at-risk for developmental delay, or have an established disability in physical, cognitive, communicative, behavioural, emotional or social areas.
Depending on the therapy or program, our staff assist children at our Centre, at home, in pre-schools and daycares, and in other community settings.

THERAPY SERVICES
SPEECH LANGUAGE THERAPY
The focus of Speech Language therapy is to improve listening skills and understanding of spoken language, as well as to make the mouth movements necessary for speech. A child is encouraged to speak clearly and use correct grammatical structures when speaking. He or she is assisted to understand the use of body language, gestures, signs and/or pictures to help express needs and ideas, turn taking and conversational skills crucial for playing and communicating effectively.
OCCUPATIONAL THERAPY
Occupational Therapy (OT) addresses function and promotes independence through skill development, and by adaptation of activities, equipment and the environment.
The areas of focus are self-care (activities of daily living), productivity (learning and educational activities) and leisure (play). Occupational Therapy also addresses the functional abilities required for daily living such as, motor, sensory, cognition and psychosocial performance areas.
PHYSICAL THERAPY
Physical therapy (PT) treat and assist in management of congenital, developmental, neuromuscular, skeletal, or acquired disorders and diseases through a focus on improving fine and gross motor skills, balance and coordination, as well as strength and endurance. Motor development is encouraged through everyday activities, play, positioning, handling and use of equipment. Physical Therapists look at a child’s strength and muscle control, movement of joints, balance reactions, coordination and motor skills.
CLINICAL COUNSELING
The clinical counselor provides professional services to children up to school age entry and their families who are current clients of Starbright. Using TheraPlay and play therapy, the counselor works with the child to help him or her work through the complex emotions that give rise to the kind of behavior that can exclude them. For family members the counselor assists with the significant stress that can be felt in times of crisis.
PROGRAM SERVICES
INFANT DEVELOPMENT
The Infant Development Program is a home-based service for parents with infants with a developmental delay, a diagnosed disability, or who are at-risk for developmental delay.
SUPPORTED CHILD DEVELOPMENT
The Supported Child Development Program (SCD) is intended for children who require extra support to be included in an early learning centre. Completion of a Support Guide and evidence of a developmental delay or disability in physical, communicative, cognitive, or social, emotional or behavioral areas are required.
The SCD Program assists families in finding child care settings, monitors a child’s participation, and consults as needed to help facilitate a child’s inclusion. The SCD Team collaborates with parents, childcare staff, and supporting professionals to develop individual program plans.
BEHAVIOUR INTERVENTION FOR
CHILDREN WITH AUTISM
The Autism Program provides behaviour intervention for children diagnosed with an Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). Our program teaches to the core needs of autism based on the most current research. Our program focuses on social interaction skills and the functional use of language with the aim of increasing the child’s ability to function positively in their family and in the community.
