This new NASAR course is designed to train Law Enforcement Investigators, Search and Rescue Coordinators, and Search and Rescue Team Members to manage the “search” aspects of a missing person incident in the urban setting.
TEXTBOOK – Urban Search – Managing Missing Person Searches in the Urban Environment by Chris Young is available for purchase at the class.
About the Course
Law Enforcement agencies in our cities and towns are being called upon to respond to missing/endangered persons with greater frequency. Law Enforcement agencies are frequently requesting the assistance of local search and rescue resources to help locate missing persons in their jurisdictions. We have historically thought of Search and Rescue incidents as involving missing persons in the wilderness environment. This increase in urban missing persons is expanding the mission of Search and Rescue organizations into the urban environment.
The Urban Search Management Course will prepare Law Enforcement Investigators/ Managers and Search and Rescue personnel for the specific tasks and special techniques needed for successful searching in the urban setting. This will include comparing and contrasting the Urban/Suburban/Rural Interface with the Wilderness Search processes.
Discussions will include pre-planning, vulnerability assessment, size-up, and moving into managing the Urban Search Incident from the initial Hasty Search through multiple operational periods. Special emphasis will be given to additional investigation considerations, modification and additional documentation required, and the use of Search and Rescue resources with their specialized search skills and training. Scenarios, practice sessions, and map exercises will be included.
