Activate/Build Prior Knowledge:
Have you ever worked in a soup kitchen? What is a soup kitchen? Have you ever taken dinner to someone? Why would you need to take dinner to other people? Have any of you ever had someone bring dinner to your family? How are we responsible for each other?
Today we are going to read a story about a grandpa and his grandson and we are going to learn about ways they help other people in their community. While you are doing this I want you to collect 6 words that you think are interesting. When you are done reading the story you are going to need to draw a picture of the word and give a description of what the word means.
Comprehension Strategy:
Monitor understanding through vocabulary words
During Reading
Using appropriate Guided reading strategies, students will be reading at their own pace and teachers will be listening to students read, monitoring, giving feedback, taking anecdotal notes and running records.
Watch students to see if they are adding interesting words to their vocabulary chart.
Suggested Pacing: All in one day

After Reading

Have students draw pictures and write a description of each of the 6 vocabulary words that they collected.
Share the different vocabulary words that the students put on their sheets.

*Not all activities will be done in each lesson. Some lessons may take multiple days to complete. However, all students should be reading each time you meet.
