Ride for Homes 2013 Packing List

On-the-Bike Clothing (make sure your name is on ALL clothing, in case it ends up in the Sag car!)

·  NO Cotton Clothing! Cotton is a negative insulator and, when wet, it is heavy and dries slowly. “Cotton is rotten” for endurance sports!

·  Cycling helmet — ANSI and/or Snell approved. Helmet must be worn AT ALL TIMES while riding!

• Cycling /Touring shoes — good for walking (cleat covers recommended for off-the-bike walking)
• Cycling gloves

·  Sunglasses

·  Cycling shorts (one pair/day, or rinse and dry in your hotel room)

·  Cycling hat or helmet with a brim for sun protection

·  Socks — wool or synthetic (a pair a day or rinse and dry in your hotel room)

·  Leg warmers or tights for riding (rain pants could substitute)

·  Short-sleeved shirts or cycling jerseys (2 – 3). No cotton shirts!

·  Light, long-sleeved shirt for layering and sun protection.

·  Rain gear (jacket and pants). Shoe covers optional but strongly suggested.

Off-the-Bike Clothing

·  Comfortable shorts

·  Comfortable pants (zip-off legs are a good bet)

·  Underwear (1 to 3 pairs)

·  Sandals, flip-flops or lightweight shoes

·  Fleece jacket or wool sweater

·  Casual shirt

·  Swimsuit (optional): many of our hotels have pools!

For meeting with legislators at State Capitol:

·  One pair of comfortable business-casual clothing. It doesn’t need to be super-fancy!

Toiletries (besides the basics)
• Chamois cream

·  Sunscreen

·  Insect repellant

·  Your regular medicines

·  Tylenol or Advil

·  Benadryl (for allergic reactions)


Miscellaneous bike gear

·  2 large water bottles or camelback bladder

·  Energy bars/gels

·  Electrolyte tablets

·  Camera and journal (optional)

Tools and Spare Parts

·  *Front and back bike lights (white front light, red blinking back light). *Required!

·  Lightweight lock and cable (not a U-Lock): optional, if you plan to leave your bike outside at lunch stops.

·  Tire levers/patch kit

·  Spare tubes (at least two)

·  Mini air pump

·  Multi-tool

·  Pocket knife or Leatherman (pliers and other tools are handy)

·  Small bottle of chain lube and rag

·  One or two extra spokes (if you have an unusual spoke, bring extra).
