Term 1 2014

Medieval Me

Year Two

Rabbits Class

Mrs Maggs

Topic -This term our topic is called MedievalMe. It is going to be very busy and exciting with a visit to a castle, a medieval feast, and a battle to get us going. History work will focus on the study of medieval life around the time of 1066. We will find out about key people and events that shaped history such as William the Conqueror and The Battle of Hastings. Geography focuses on our own county of Wiltshire and puts it in context with surrounding counties of the West of England. We hope to visit a castle where we can do some field study. Art and Design and Technology work will link to history. We will make a heraldic flag and a stained glass window. Mrs Garrett will help us recreate a medieval feast.RE will focus on the teachings of Jesus.

In Computing we begin the term with a unit of work aboutinternetsafety. We will apply these skills when using the internet to send e-mails and when using websites to research information for our topic. In music we will sing songs such as the HairyScaryCastle song, and the song of St George and the Dragon. The focus is on voice and body percussion.

Maths - In maths we reinforce knowledge of place value and order numbers on a blank number line and we will learn to use the greater than and less than signs when comparing numbers. Multiplication work will focus on the 2, 3, 5 and 10 timestables- this will form part of their homework. In shape, space and measure we will revisit data handling and learn to record information in tables, block graphs and pictograms.

English- Stories this term will include George and the D, The tough princess, and The knight who was afraid of the dark. Non-fiction work will focus on information texts linked to castles, and medieval life and this will link with our history work. We will also be working on joining our handwriting. Spellings will be set and tested weekly on a Friday.

Science - Our science work will focus on animals including humans. We will look at life cycles and understand that living things grow and reproduce.

PE – We are fortunate to have the support of a dance specialist this term to teach us some medieval style circle dances. We might even manage a sword dance! Mrs Garrett will teach games.

PSHE - The unit of work is called ‘Our happy school’. The children will write and agree their own class rules. We will discuss what makes a good friend and they will learn about working together and ways of solving conflict when it arises.

PPA cover- Mrs Jane Garrett will teach all day every Thursday to allow me to carry out my leadership role. She will also cover on Friday afternoons.
