Fine binding, book arts, conservation bookbinding and calligraphy

The post holder may be required to work at other locations.
1.6 / Hourly Rate: / £22.70 per hour inclusive of pro rata holiday entitlement and preparation time.
1.7 / Hours of Work: / 4 hours per week
This post includes evening and occasional weekend work.

Main purpose of the job

/ To coordinate and supervise courses within the bookbinding and calligraphy programme area; participate in curriculum development activities in liaison with Contemporary Crafts team. Contribute to the design of a distinctive and high quality programme. Play a key role in the promotion and success of the programme area. Support part-time tutors and the 3D technician as appropriate; carry out the necessary administrative and quality assurance procedures.
3. / Main activities and responsibilities
3.1  / Coordinate, plan, monitor and review the bookbinding and calligraphy programme in liaison with the Head of Programme, paying close attention to quality assurance and supporting curriculum change.
3.2  / Assist the Head of Programme in the development of the curriculum, organisation, publicity and administration in relation to the subject area; monitoring course outlines within the subject area.
3.3  / Support tutors; undertaking observations of teaching and learning, supporting performance through developmental or capability actions as appropriate.
3.4  / Assist with training tutors, including undertaking training sessions in agreement with the Head of Programme, giving feedback to tutors, advising on curriculum methodology and materials.
3.5  / Support the implementation of the Teaching and Learning strategy within the programme area to an outstanding level.
3.6  / Monitor quality assurance for the subject area including attendance monitoring, assuring the completion of course review and evaluation documentation by tutors and students through personal statements of learning and individual written feedback. Use this information to inform planning in a timely manner.
3.7  / Participate in the recruitment and selection of staff and induction of new tutors.
3.8  / Observe teaching and learning according to City Lit policy and provide feedback and support as appropriate.
3.9  / Deliver an outstanding student experience through innovative programme design by attending networking events; collating student images, and marketing publicity tasks.
3.10  / In liaison with the Head of Programme, organise termly subject team meetings, setting the agenda and recording the minutes
3.11  / Undertake teaching commitments in the subject area. Contact hours per year to be negotiated with the Head of Programme.
3.12  / Provide cover for absent colleagues.
3.13  / Carry out the necessary administration associated with running a programme including upholding policies related to sickness and absenteeism
3.14  / Carry out programmed tutorials.
3.15  / Supervise the organisation and improvement of the specialist rooms, ensuring proper maintenance and overseeing the correct procedure for the safe disposal of hazardous waste.
3.16  / Advise and assess students during advice sessions (including some weekend and evening duties) and provide telephone advice and office cover as required.
3.17  / Represent the programme area both within City Lit and externally as appropriate to the post.
3.18  / Attend relevant training events and meetings as required.

1.  / Selection criteria / Your application should show evidence that demonstrates that you:




4.1  / Qualifications / ·  Have Level 2 qualifications in both Literacy and Numeracy (or equivalent).
·  Have relevant qualifications in Bookbinding (essential) and or Calligraphy (desirable)
·  Have a level 5 Diploma in Education and Training or equivalent (e.g. stage 3 teaching qualification or PGCE), preferably for teaching adults, plus commitment to complete further CPD or teacher training qualifications if required.
4.2  / Work experience / ·  Have experience of teaching two or more specialist areas of bookbinding (preferably to adults). Please indicate clearly in your application your areas of expertise and experience.
·  Be a practicing bookbinder with tight links to industry and demonstrable evidence of contemporary practice.
·  Have proven experience of team work
·  Demonstrable experience of supporting and implementing change to curriculum design
·  Experience working on databases and a willingness to develop database skills
