About the scholarship

Summary

The scholarship was established in 2014. The aim of the scholarship is to encourage and assist Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students in health-related areas to complete their studies, gain exposure to health policy and engage with health leaders. The funds are made available by Australian Healthcare and Hospitals Association (AHHA), Australian Council on Healthcare Standards (ACHS) and HESTA Super. It features attendance at the annual AHHA National Congress, The Quantum Leap (travel, meals and accommodation included).

The scheme will open for applications on 1 July 2014 and close 4 August 2014.

Consisting of:

·  12 months student membership of the AHHA ($220)

·  Registration for the AHHA/ACHS The Quantum Leap Conference to be held in Sydney from 9-10 September 2014.($440)

·  2 nights accommodation and travel costs to Sydney (approx. $1500)

·  Cash payment to assist with general study costs (balance of value)

Applicant criteria

The applicant must

·  identify as and be able to demonstrate their Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander status. Applicants must provide a written statement confirming their Aboriginal orTorres Strait Islander heritage. In addition they are required to provide a signed statement in writing from the Aboriginal Heritage Association,Aboriginal Corporation or Land Council of the community in which they live or have lived, confirming the above.

·  be undertaking undergraduate or postgraduate level studies in one of the following disciplines; aged care, allied health, dentistry/oral health, community health, health promotion, medicine, mental health, midwifery, nursing, population health.

·  Be able to attend the AHHA National Congress in Sydney on 9-10 September 2014 (costs included in scholarship)

Successful applicants based on

Scholarships are available through a competitive process and are awarded on the recommendation and ranking of a selection committee, based on how the applicant addresses the selection questions outlined in the application and their potential to contribute as future leaders in health.

Scholarship winners will be selected by a Scholarship Selection Committee comprising:

·  Chief Executive, AHHA;

·  A representative from HESTA; and

·  A member of the AHHA National Council.

Shortlisted applicants may be required to participate in a telephone interview in early August.
