Steps ‘n’ Stetsons

NEWSLETTER SEPTEMBER 2012

Welcome back everyone!

We hope you had a very patriotic,

if somewhat damp, summer and are ready

for an autumn of dancing and fun

RECYCLING

We are entering the "Top of the Pots" competition to see how many Danone yoghurt pots we can recycle up to the end of October

We have also started saving coffee jar lids, coffee bags (ground, beans or refill instant coffee) and coffee sachets

Ask at class for a list of all we recycle now and help raise money for Pancreatic Cancer Research Fund

Stuart did his sponsored walk for Pancreatic Cancer Research Fund and raised a fabulous £1182. People pledged online donations, paper pledges and even put change in his collection pot!

Well done Stuart and we hope the feet are not too sore!

We will be holding another tea dance for beginners and improvers on Sunday 21 October 3.00-5.30 pm at the Crescent Centre, Lower Earley

November is Pancreatic Cancerawareness month and they are encouraging people to "bake and share" to raise money for the charity so at classes on Wednesday 7 and Thursday 8 November we will provide tea, coffee and cakes (donations of cakes would be much appreciated)

Classes will be closed from the Snowball social to Tuesday 8 January 2013 when we start another year

Tour de Sonning!

Meet Rita - we joined the village of Sonning in their Scarecrow Trail on 4 and 5 June by making this scarecrow made of the recycled materials collected by the club. Our dancers who teamed up to create "Rita" were Margaret Gregory, Sally Gunnee, Carole Millward, Julie Myers, Brenda Nicolaou, Stephanie Stoter, Jackie Townsend and Diana Wicks. The club recycled Tassimo cartidges and bags, Danone yoghurt pots andKenco bags in conjunction with Terracycle and so far have raised over £300 for our charities Alzheimers, Pancreatic Cancer and Alexander Devine.

The Scarecrow trail is held every two years in the village of Sonning and funds are raised for the village amenities by every adult visiting the trail buying a Scarecrow map for £4

Gay

As you will all probably know by now, sadly our friend and club member, Gay (Gaynor Jeanne Garton) lost her fight against pancreatic cancer on Monday 25 June 2012. Gay started line dancing in 2000 when she joined Just For Kicks in Arborfield and was in their demo team for several years. WhenJFK became Steps 'n' Stetsons, Gay was one of many original members who became steadfast supportersof the new club, becoming one of the support team, helping decorate the hall for socials and collecting the money on the front desk (which she loved because it meant she could talk to everyone). The photo shows Gay surrounded by two of her closest friends (from left to right Wendy, Gay and Jill).

Roaring Twenties!

Well done for creating all those fabulous outfits for the Roaring Twenties social on 1 August. You all looked fantastic!

Our thoughts are with Jan Evans, who has had to step down as our helper on a Tuesday morning due to cancer treatment. We wish Jan well and thank her for her hard work. We would also like to thank Beverley Gribble who has stepped in to help in Jan's place. Thanks also to all our amazing team of helpers, without whom the class and socials would not be such a success.
