Course Description:

This course provides the new and returning student with special study skills proven to be effective by successful college students. New perspectives on note-taking, study skills, improved reading methods and test taking tactics are presented to the students through lecture, multimedia, Internet activities, guided modeling and activities. These new tools generate greater self-confidence and the ability to view learning as a natural part of the thinking process.

Required Textbooks and Materials:

Textbook: Keys to Success 7th Edition by Carter, Bishop and Kravits and the IRSC Catalog

Required Material: 6 green scantrons

Flash Drive: You will need a Flash Drive, also called a USB Key, of 1 GB or larger. This will enable you to back-up your work! BACKUP ALL WORK if you do it electronically!

Attendance Policy:

This class meets regularly at the above times and dates except for institution wide holidays. It is your responsibility to attend every class. In the case ofa change, the instructor will let you know during the prior class or referencewww.irsc.eduto see the College schedule in the case of an emergency closing.

Attendance is critical for success in any venture, this course included. YOU MUST ATTEND EVERY CLASS! Your attendance is also required on the date of the Final Exam, which is published in the course schedule.

A 6-point reduction from the attendance points will occur for each absence. Tardiness or leaving prior to the scheduled end of class will result in additional point deductions. Students are welcome to attend another session of the class when an absence is unavoidable. Please see Mrs. Ensmann for details. Attendance for online students is measured by time and tasks attempted in Angel.

Grading & Requirements:

Last day to drop this course for a refund and no grade on transcript is Wednesday, January 11, 2011. Commit to succeed prior to January 11th, or drop the class! Please do not expect the professor to withdraw you or give you an incomplete grade in the last few days of the course due to a failing grade.

Cheating or plagiarism will result in a minimum of a zero on the test or assignment, and possible withdrawal from the class.

These assignments and components comprise your grade in this course.

Students will be called upon to participate, both formally and informally, in instructor-guided class discussions during the semester. This participation will help students to prepare for a well-planned, pre-scheduled, oral presentation. Online students will submit their presentation online.

Every student must take the final exam at the end of the term in order to receive a final grade. Students are expected to complete all assigned activities on time. Late assignments are not acceptable.

The use of cell phones is prohibited during class at IRSC (unless approved by instructor for educational purposes). All cell phones must be set on silent or off during the class period. Any student who uses a cell phone to make or answer a call, or send and read text messages or emails, other than IRSC emergency messages and/or instructor directed educational research during class time may be asked to leave and may be considered absent for that class. No student has the right to disturb the teaching and learning process.

Means of Accomplishing Outcomes:

This class will use an online learning content management system called Angel to track attendance and house class content. You are required to submit work within Angel as directed. Points will be deducted from your projects for failing to participate and complete work as directed.

Library and Online Reference Materials:

The Miley Library serves as IRSC's main library, providing professional assistance, library books and media, and access to the library's electronic resources. There is an extensive online database system also available through IRSC’s website www.irsc.edu.

The ASWC is a free service offered to all IRSC students to help improve their academic writing and to promote writing as a practical life skill. . The Center promotes a creative and positive learning environment. One of the ASWC's goals is to help writers become efficient proofreaders of their own work. Located: Academic Support Center Main Campus: L-Building, Floor 3. St. Lucie West Campus also provides an Academic Support Center where students may receive help with writing from Reading and English tutors in the lab.
