TITLE: Nominating Committee – Slate of Officers – 2015/16

ACTION: Motion to approve the slate of officers as follows: Chair: Polly Baca, Vice Chair: Jose Leyba, Ph. D., Treasurer: Matt DeAngelis, Secretary: Gina Nocera

BACKGROUND:

Section 6.7 of the New America Schools Network Bylaws establishes the Network Nominating Committee. It is a standing committee of the Board. However, at the February 26, 2015 meeting of the Network, an advisory nominating committee, (Sect.6.8) to recommend a slate of officers (Article V) was approved. This committee’s three members are: Juan Vigil, Paula Gomez Farrell and Jose Leyba, Ph.D. The committee requested staff prepare a skill and experience matrix; see attachment 1, from which it would assess each director’s skill and experience alongside their related duties.

The committee met, Ms. Gomez Farrell by phone, on April 15, 2015. Vigil and Leyba being at the Fundraising Committee Meeting discussed the issue of continuity given the Fundraising Committee’s action to recommend adoption of strategies to promote the mission of the Network. Discussions were held with the current Chair, Ms. Polly Baca who agreed to continue to serve as Chair. Mr. Rick Bella, current Vice Chair stated that due to pressing personal issues he could not continue serving in that position. Dr. Jose Leyba agreed to being recommended as Vice Chair. Mr. Larry Mason, Las Vegas Director, is the current Treasurer; however this Charter School’s application is currently in limbo. Given the Fundraising Committee’s proposal to accelerate the fundraising activity having someone who is readily available to respond to staff is critical. Since Mr. Matt DeAngelis has the background to fulfill these responsibilities. He was asked if he would be willing to be nominated. He agreed to serve as Treasurer if elected.

The Nominating Committee recommends the approval of the proposed late of officers for 2015/16. We stand ready to answer any questions from the Network Board, staff and Governing Board members.
