Party Structure: The Democratic Party structure in Washington State is based on the precinct, legislative district, and county where you live.There is a Democratic Party representative or organization at each of these levels.

The Precinct

The base unit of organization is the precinct. A precinct may contain several blocks in an urban area or a group of houses in suburban or rural areas.There is an average of 511 voters in a precinct.Look on your voter registration card or call your county auditor's office to see which precinct you live in. Each precinct is represented by a Democratic official called the Precinct Committee Officer (PCO).

Legislative Districts and Counties

There are 49 legislative districts and 39 counties in Washington.Your legislative district (LD) defines how you are represented in the State Legislature in Olympia.Each LD is represented by a State Senator and two State Representatives in the State Legislature.To see which LD you live in, go to http://apps.leg.wa.gov/districtfinder. There is a Democratic organization in each LD and county.They hold monthly meetings, recruit and manage PCOs and volunteers for your area, and campaign for local Democratic candidates.

Washington State Democratic Central Committee

The Washington State Democratic Central Committee (WSDCC) is the state-wide umbrella organization for the Democratic Party.The WSDCC is presided over by Chairman Dwight Pelz and other officers.Each LD and county organization elects a female representative and male representative to the WSDCC.

The WSDCC sets the tone for the Democratic Party in Washington, supports LD and county organizations, and takes the lead for recruiting and supporting Democratic candidates for federal and state-wide office.

Democratic Central Committee

The Democratic National Committee (DNC) is the national umbrella organization for the Democratic Party.It is presided over by Chairman Gov.Tim Kaineand other officers.Each State Party organization sends representatives to the DNC. The DNC takes the lead in setting the Democratic agenda for the nation.They support the president when they are a Democrat and lead the opposition when the president is a Republican.
