Wavecare

Wavecare is a not for profit organisation providing counselling and support services to children, youth, adults and seniors in the City of Monash.

Wavecare is an Incorporated Association registered with Consumer Affairs Victoria and has a Board of Management which provides governance. Wavecare promotes a sense of positive inclusion, community connectedness and actively reduces mental health and social issues. Presenting issues can include mood disorders, abuse and trauma,relationship and family issues, addictions and eating disorders, peri-natal, child youth and family and counselling seniors. Wavecare also provides assistance for WorkCover and employment related issues and clinical supervision.

Role Statement:

This position will be responsible for the provision of counselling psychology services as part of a team, providing services to people of all ages in the City of Monash. Counselling is provided at the offices as well as off site and outreach. The psychology service will include the assessment of clients to assist with assessment, diagnosis and treatment. It will also involve the provision of consultation and supervision to staff and key stakeholders in relation to more complex mental health disorders, clinical presentations and management of the clients associated behaviours. Wavecare also provides employee assistance counselling (EAP) to people impacted on by adverse events in the work environment.

The psychologist will need to demonstrate experience in providing:

  • individual, (couples, family and group counselling is desirable)
  • appropriate case documentation
  • writing reports
  • positive interactions within the team
  • supervision, training and induction (may include staff, volunteers and students)
  • assistance to actively promote and market Wavecare’s activities

Key Accountabilities:

Providing a comprehensive service to clients referred through Medicare Psychological Support Services and EAP

This includes:

  • conductingcounselling and assessments
  • advising referrers, team members, clients and carers on the most appropriate psychological interventions or strategies for managing psychological problems identified on assessment;
  • providing timely formal reports and client file entries to the referrer and relevant external parties
  • liaising with staff, carers, community agencies and relevant parties
  • attending and presenting at in-service education sessions, seminars and workshops
  • assisting in the promotion and marketing of Wavecare counselling services
  • contributing to the design, implementation and evaluation of counselling activities

Maintainingactive participation as a member of the team

This includes:

  • participation as required in relevant team meetings, case conferences and organizational activities
  • providing reports and information
  • providing advice and information about the most appropriate psychological care and management of clients in conjunction with other team members
  • involvement in the development and evaluation of programs, quality improvement activities (clinical audit) or research projects where appropriate

Participating in the activities of the Psychology Service

This includes:

  • collection of appropriate data
  • attendance at and participation in staff meetings
  • involvement in the development and implementation of Continuous Improvement plans
  • participation in the development and review of Psychology Service Policies and Procedures where appropriate

Participating in continuous professional development, education and training

This includes:

  • appraisal of performance at 6 months’ probation and thereafter every 12 months
  • attendance at in-service education sessions, seminars and external conferences where appropriate
  • involvement in presentation of in-service sessions to other staff or other relevant agencies where appropriate

Contribute to a safe work environment for all staff

  • Conduct yourself in a manner that will not endanger yourself or others
  • Follow Wavecare Occupational Health and Safety policies and procedures
  • Report any unsafe work practices, hazards, near miss incidents and accidents
  • Maintain an awareness of the Occupational Health and Safety Act 2004 and the Accident Compensation (WorkCover) Act 1992
  • Contribute to safety awareness and promotion by code of conduct, policies and procedures

Key Performance Indicators

In meeting the above accountabilities, the following key performances are required:

  • High level of competence in the field of clinical psychology
  • Provision of a clinical psychology service that is responsive to client need, timely in provision of reports, effective and high in quality, as demonstrated by patient-related outcome measures and referrer feedback
  • Participation in the team in a manner that promotes cohesion and a well-functioning team
  • Effective functioning as a member of a team as well as an independent clinician
  • Proficiency in working with individuals from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds

Selection Criteria (Qualifications / Experience / Skills):

  • Membership or eligibility for membership of the Australian Psychological Society
  • Current registration with the Registration Board of Australia and Medicare Provider
  • Demonstrated clinical competence in the field of adult and child/youth clinical psychology
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a team as well as liaise and consult with a range of clients, carers, professionals and community agencies as an independent clinician
  • A high level of written, oral communication skills and interpersonal skills
  • Demonstrated time management skills, and the ability to generate strategies for prioritising workloads effectively
  • Willingness and capacity to mentor and support others
  • Knowledge and understanding of relevant legislation (e.g OH&S, Information Privacy Act 2000 and the Health Records Act 2001)

Desirable

  • Experience in the working with infants, children, youth and families
  • Experience in working with individuals from non-English speaking backgrounds
  • Ability and experience in working with couples and families
