2015 NOTICE OF RACE

1. ORGANIZING AUTHORITY
The Carolina Yacht Club is the organizing authority.
2. RULES
2.1 The races will be governed by the rules as defined in the Racing Rules of
Sailing 2013-2016.
2.2 While the attached Schedule of Regattas includes events other than local-
level events, i.e., regional, area and national, this Notice of Race applies
only to local/club-level events.
3. ELIGIBILITY AND ENTRY
3.1 Eligibility requirements for competitors are that they shall be regular, sailing
and seasonal members of the Carolina Yacht Club, the spouses and children
of those members and others invited. For the Ancient Mariner’s race the
minimum age for competitors shall be 50. Participation in the James Match
Race is by invitation only.
3.2 Eligibility requirements for boats are that they shall be one-design boats of
the Optimist, Sunfish, Laser, 420 and Lightning classes and any other one-
design class registering three (3) or more boats except for the James Match
which shall be sailed in club 420’s.
3.3 All boats shall display sail numbers on both sides of the main sail in
accordance with rules 77 and G.
3.4 A minimum of three (3) boats of one design shall be required to constitute a
fleet. Competitors shall sail as one fleet in all classes.
3.5 Eligible boats may be entered by completing registration with the race
committee on the day of the race. Registration will be at dockside until the
race committee signal boat leaves the dock and, thereafter, at the stern of
the signal boat until the first warning signal.
3.6 Wearing of a personal flotation device is required in Sunfish, Laser,
Optimist and 420's but will be at the discretion of the competitor in
Lightnings, unless signaled otherwise by the Race Committee.
3.7 Use of Intensity sails is permitted.
4. SCHEDULE OF EVENTS
4.1 The schedule of race dates, the time of first warning signal and number of
races each day is attached and on the club website.
4.2 The attached schedule also indicates for each race day whether there will be
a competitor’s meeting. Competitor’s meetings, if held, will start
approximately one hour before the day’s first scheduled warning signal.
5. SAILING INSTRUCTIONS
Sailing instructions and this Notice of Race will be available each race day at the
notice board next to the flag pole at the soundside gazebo or from the race
committee.
6. RACE AREA
The races will be sailed in the Banks Channel and Motts Channel area of
Greenville Sound west of the club and/or in the ocean near Masonboro Inlet.
7. COURSE(S) TO BE SAILED
The course(s) that may be sailed each race day will be described in an
attachment to the sailing instructions or will be depicted on the course board in
the gazebo if there is a competitor’s meeting. If there is no competitor’s meeting,
the specific course to be sailed for each race will be displayed on the course
board at the stern of the race committee signal boat.
8. SCORING
8.1 Sound and ocean series races
A. The low point scoring system, rule A4.1 modified by rule A9 will apply.
B. With 11 races scheduled for the sound series and 12 for the ocean
series, four (4) shall be completed to constitute a series.
C. Each boat’s series score will be the total of her race scores except
where prohibited by the rules:
1. When eight (8) races have been completed, a boat’s series score will
be the total of her race scores excluding her worst score.
2. When ten (10) races have been completed, a boat’s series score will
be the total of her race scores excluding her three (3) worst scores.
D. Competitors who do not compete in a race of this series due to
participation in US Sailing, SAYRA or District Championship level
events or due to serving as a member of the race committee for this
series shall be scored for that race using the average of points earned in the total ofthe 3 consecutiveraceseither immediately before or after their absence. Redress for these activities shall be limited to 3 races in a series. These constructive results shall also count toward the races required for qualification and calculation of discards.
8.2 For all races other than the sound and ocean series races:
A. The low point scoring system of Appendix A will apply.
B. No score will be discarded unless changed by a separate NOR. This
changes rule A2
9. PRIZES
Prizes will be awarded as follows:
One prize 3 to 5 boat fleet
Two prizes 6 to 10 boat fleet
Three prizes 11 to 15 boat fleet
Four prizes 16 to 19 boat fleet
There will be an awards presentation on Tuesday October 6th.
