The School of Veterinary & Life Sciences Annual Postgraduate Poster Day will be held on Friday 31st October.

Poster day is an opportunity for you to present your work to the School via a poster and socially mix with invited guests from the university and external collaborative organisations. Additionally, there will be lots of prizes on offer for best presentations. In addition to the financial bonus, winning a prize looks fantastic on your CV!

You are receiving this e-mail as you are eligible to present a poster (you have been enrolled >6 months, and have not already participated in three poster days).

Please send your poster titles to We will need to have these at least a week in advance of the day (i.e.by Friday 24th October to ensure that you are entered to win prizes – we need to sort out categories for prizes which takes a little while.

POSTER FORMAT

  • Please note that PORTRAIT A0-sized (1189 x 841 mm) posters are required, since landscape posters cannot be accommodated.
  • We suggest you make your poster in PowerPoint – it is an easy programme to work with and the printers will recognise the format. Once you have designed your poster, send a PDF to the printers – PDFs maintain the file integrity and alleviate any font issues.
  • It is a great idea to stick a photo of yourself to the corner of your poster – it will help the judges, invitees and other students to get to know who you are.

PRINTING YOUR POSTER

  • MURDOCH PRINT requires at least 4 working days to print out posters. Also keep in mind that they may find it difficult to meet the demands of ~100 students all going 4 days before … (get it to them the-sooner-the-better)
  • There are alternative printers around too which are worth looking into (i.e. they are cheaper!):

-MEDIA SOLUTIONS Jeff Green 0405002638 You can e-mail Jeff your poster (in PDF format) and he will even deliver to Murdoch! Can’t get any easier than that.

JUDGING

FYI, we ask the judges to mark the posters on three criteria:

1. content [4/10], i.e. the science, do the aims meet the conclusions?

2. presentation [3/10], i.e. clarity of writing, not too many words

3. impact [3/10], i.e. graphics, good illustration of points

From talking to judges in the past, I have found that they each have their own specific criteria they look for, e.g.:

-Some judges want to see hypotheses clearly stated

-Some have very particular (and often peculiar) tastes in graphics and artwork

-Almost unanimously, they are averse to busy backgrounds (e.g. photos)

-Most times they comment that there is too much text (we have never had a situation where there is too little text)

-All want large text: font of 40pt at least

Finally, we would love you to volunteer to help up putting up poster boards, setting out platters of food, manning the bar etc. Please if you are available!
