- NFHS RULES/IHSAA MODIFICATIONS
Philosophy of Officiating
Discuss the Code of Conduct and the importance for all officials to demonstrate these very important characteristics.
Discuss the Officiating Philosophy as it pertains to the importance of rules knowledge, language, and the proper use of NFHS signals/mechanics.
Personal Characteristics: Explain the importance of conditioning, decisiveness, teamwork, and maintaining control.
Discuss the importance of proper preparation prevents poor performance (examples incl. rules study, practicing mechanics, attending association meetings, obtaining a schedule and sending back contracts).
Working with coaches and athletes.
Provide guidance on the different vendors that supply NFHS approved attire.
Uniform and Equipment: Discuss the uniform/equipment guidelines (posted on IHSAA Central Hub)
NFHS Rules and IHSAA Modifications - Officials will discuss NFHS Rule Changes and any Points of Emphasis for the current year.
Discuss the 2013-14 rules revisions, editorial changes and points of emphasis.
Review IHSAA modifications to NFHS rules.
Tournament Ratings Protocol
Explain the tournament ratings protocol using the power point as a teaching tool.
Rule Review
Review Rule 1 (Definitions) and Rule 2 (Pool, Lane, and Equipment Specifications) and discuss a couple of Case Book Situations in Rule 2.
Review specific definitions that may be pertinent to the upcoming season.
Discuss the different pool configurations.
Discuss the appropriate types of equipment.

Officials will have the opportunity to get on the deck and demonstrate proper mechanics.
IHSAA Starter’s Protocol
Officials will review the verbal command protocol.
Relay Take-Offs/Dual Confirmation
Dual confirmation for relay take-offs will be reviewed.
Arbiter and NFHS Educational Resources – IHSAA Officials Association Technology Chair
The Officials Association Technology Chairperson will be invited to speak on educational opportunities regarding technology. Officials will review methods of retrieving swimming and diving educational resources to be utilized for professional development.
Diving Tutorial 1 – Practice Judging
Officials will practice their judging skills using the video contained in this video. Discussion on scoring rationale will help improve accuracy and understanding of the sport.
Rule Review 3and 4
Review Rule 3 (Team Personnel) and Rule 4 (Officials and Their Duties) anddiscuss Case Book Situations.
Officials and Their Duties
Discuss responsibilities of Officials and when official’s jurisdiction begins.
Highlight the duties prior to and during the meet.
Officials will review uniform rules.

Pre-Meet Preparation
Discuss the importance of being professional at all times.
Discuss and explain the importance of communication with administration, coaches, and student athletes.
Discuss the importance of communication with fellow officials.
Discuss and define the importance of preventive meet management and preventive officiating.
Captains Meeting
Officials will discuss topics that should be covered in the pre-meet captain’s meeting.
NFHS Swim Suit Requirements
Officials will review uniform rules.
Judging High School Diving - Best Practices
Officials will discuss the tips for judging diving.
