EMERGENCY LIGHTING - UNIT EQUIPMENT
WHEN USED IN QUANTITY, THESE INDIVIDUAL UNITS CREATE EXCESSIVE DEMANDS ON MAINTENANCE DEPARTMENT WORK SCHEDULES, THEREFORE, USE OF THESE UNITS SHOULD BE HELD TO A MINIMUM. FOR ALTERNATIVES, CONSIDER THE USE OF CENTRAL STATION BATTERY UNIT (SECTION 263323), DC CENTRAL STATION OR DIESEL-ALTERNATOR. SEE INFORMATION AT END OF SECTION.
PART 1 GENERAL
1.01SUBMITTALS
A.Waiver of Submittals: The “Waiver of Certain Submittal Requirements” in Section 013300 does not apply to this Section.
B.Submittal Package: Submit the product data items specified below at the same time as a package.
C.Product Data:
1.Catalog sheets, specifications and installation instructions.
2.Battery warranty.
3.Name, address and telephone number of nearest fully equipped service organization.
D.Project Closeout Submittals:
1.Operation and Maintenance Data: Deliver 2 copies, covering the installed products, to the Director’s Representative. Include name, address and telephone number of the nearest fully equipped service organization.
1.02QUALITY ASSURANCE
A.List of Completed Installations: If brand names other than those specified are proposed for use, furnish the name, address, and telephone number of at least 5 comparable installations which can prove the proposed products have operated satisfactorily for 3 years.
B.Service Availability: A fully equipped service organization shall be available to service the completed Work.
PART 2 PRODUCTS
2.01EMERGENCY LIGHTING UNITS
USE TYPE LA AS THE STANDARD EMERGENCY LIGHTING UNIT EXCEPT WHERE THE AMBIENT TEMPERATURE MAY BE LESS THAN 45 DEGREES F.
A.Type LA: Dual-Lite Co.’s AS-BC, Emergi-Lite’s ILC Series, or Exide Electronics’ Emergency Lighting L-100, with:
USE 1-1/2 HOURS FOR GENERAL APPLICATIONS. CHANGE TO 3 OR 4 HOURS FOR CRITICAL APPLICATIONS SUCH AS HOSPITALS OR PRISONS.
1.Six volt maintenance free battery (sealed lead-calcium free electrolyte or sealed pure lead cells); Eagle-Picher Industries Inc.’s Carefree/Carefree Magnum, Exide’s LEC, or Gates Energy Products Inc’s BC Cell. Batteries shall be of suitable rating and capacity to supply and maintain at not less than 87-1/2 percent of the nominal battery voltage for the total lamp load associated with the unit for a period of at least 1-1/2 hours. Exception: Capacity not less than 24Ah at 77 degrees F (25 degrees C), 8 hour rate, to 87-1/2 percent nominal battery voltage (1.75 volts per cell).
2.Low battery voltage cut-off (not less than 80 percent of nominal battery voltage).
3.Electronic or sealed dust-tight transfer relay.
4.Six volt, 12 watt integral tungsten halogen lighting heads.

5.Input circuit suitable for operation on 120 volt, 60 Hz circuit.
6.Cabinet door having vandal resistant fasteners or lockable device and continuous piano hinge.
7.Voltmeter to indicate battery voltage.
USE SUBPARAGRAPH BELOW IF OTHER THAN STANDARD FINISH REQUIRED. STANDARD FINISHES ARE: DUAL-LITE (BRONZE HAMMERTONE); EMERGI-LITE (BEIGE/WOODGRAIN); EXIDE (2 TONE BROWN/WOODGRAIN). DELETE UNDERLINING BEFORE ENTERING INFORMATION.
8.Special finish to match room decor. Finish shall be ______.
9.Mounting shelf or bracket.
10.Time delay device for units installed in areas illuminated with high intensity discharge lighting fixtures. Emergency lighting units shall remain illuminated 15 minutes after normal power is restored.
11.Wire guard to cover unit, where indicated on drawings.
USE TYPE NC IN AREAS WHERE THE AMBIENT TEMPERATURE MAY BE LESS THAN 45 DEGREES F. NOTE: THESE UNITS COST FROM $400 TO $1000 EACH, DEPENDING ON SIZE.
B.Type NC: Dual-Lite Co.’s AS, Emergi-Lite’s NV Series, or Exide Electronics’ Emergency Lighting N-100, with:
USE 1-1/2 HOURS FOR GENERAL APPLICATIONS. CHANGE TO 3 OR 4 HOURS FOR CRITICAL APPLICATIONS SUCH AS HOSPITALS OR PRISONS.
1.Six volt nickel-cadmium battery, wet cell, pocket plate type. Batteries shall be of suitable rating and capacity to supply and maintain at not less than 87-1/2 percent of the nominal battery voltage for the total lamp load associated with the unit for a period of at least 1-1/2 hours. Batteries shall deliver full ampere-hour capacity at 0 degrees F ambient temperature.
2.Electronic or sealed dust-tight transfer relay.
3.Six volt, 12 watt integral tungsten halogen lighting heads.

2.02REMOTE LIGHTING FIXTURES
A.Six volt, 12 watt tungsten halogen lighting fixtures with mounting accessories; Dual-Lite Co.’s EXT-P5SB-T, Emergi-Lite’s EF-18, or Exide Electronic’s Emergency Lighting Model H.
PART 3 EXECUTION
3.01INSTALLATION
A.Install the Work of this Section in accordance with the manufacturer’s printed instructions.
B.Insert a copy of the battery warranty in each unit and mark on batteries the date placed in service.

2.Indicate on the drawings:
a.Units which are to be equipped with time delay device (units installed in areas illuminated with high intensity discharge lighting fixtures).
b.Units required to have wire guards.
c.Number of integral and remote heads required for each unit. Use from 1 to 3 integral heads. Do not exceed total of 10 integral and remote 12 watt heads per unit at the 1-1/2 hour rate. Check catalogs for maximum number at 3 & 4 hour rate.
d.Mounting height.
e.Emergency lighting units connected to the building electrical system using a short length of flexible steel conduit.
f.Wiring properly sized to remote lighting fixtures (these are 6 volt circuits, requiring due consideration to keep voltage drop within acceptable limits).
