16 May 2014Page 1

SPEC NOTE: This Section specifies suspension systems for acoustical and panel/grid ceilings. It must be correlated with acoustical units in Section 09510 - Acoustical Ceilings.

SPEC NOTE ENVIRONMENT: This Section specifies environmentally responsible material choices, including recycling and reuse options, and generally available disposal options.

Part 1General

1.1DESIGN REQUIREMENTS

.1Maximum deflection: 1/360th of span.

SPEC NOTE: Shop drawings not normally required. Only include if special layouts, features or conditions warrant them.

1.2SHOP DRAWINGS

.1Submit shop drawings in pdf format.

1.3SAMPLES

.1Submit samples when instructed by Architect.

.2Submit one representative model of each type ceiling suspension system.

.3Ceiling system to show basic construction and assembly, treatment at walls, recessed fixtures, splicing, interlocking, finishes, acoustical unit installation.

1.4REGULATORY REQUIREMENTS

.1Fire-resistance rated suspension system: certified by a Canadian Certification Organization accredited by Standards Council of Canada.

1.5WASTE MANAGEMENT AND DISPOSAL

.1Separate and recycle waste materials.

.2Divert unused metal materials from landfill to metal recycling facility.

SPEC NOTE ENVIRONMENT: The disposal of packaging waste into landfill site demonstrates an inefficient use of natural resources and consumes valuable landfill space.

.3Remove from site and dispose of packaging materials at appropriate recycling facilities.

.4Dispose of corrugated cardboard, polystyrene, plastic and packaging material in appropriate on-site bin for recycling in accordance with site waste management program.

2.1MATERIALS

.1Heavy duty system.

.2Basic materials for suspension system: commercial quality cold rolled steel or aluminum sheet, mill finished.

SPEC NOTE: If more than one suspension system is required, indicate location of different systems on finish schedule, properly correlated with type of acoustical panel or tile specified in Section 09510 - Acoustical Ceilings, and specify each system.

.3Suspension system: As indicated on the drawings.

SPEC NOTE: For paragraph .4 refer to Spec Note preceding paragraph .3 re specifying more than one system.

.4Fire-resistance rated suspension system: certified for use in rated assemblies and as indicated on drawings.

.5Exposed tee bar grid components: white. Components die cut. Main tee with double web, rectangular bulb and 16 mm rolled cap on exposed face. Cross tee with rectangular bulb; web extended to form positive interlock with main tee webs; lower flange extended and offset to provide flush intersection.

.6Hanger wire: galvanized soft annealed steel wire.

.13.6 mm diameter for access tile ceilings.
.2to ULC design requirements for fire rated assemblies.
.32.6 mm diameter for other ceilings.

.7Hanger inserts: purpose made.

SPEC NOTE: For the following paragraph check manufacturers literature to determine need for carrying channels for system specified.

.8Carrying channels: 38 x 90 mmchannel, of 0.9 mm (20 ga) thick galvanized steel.

.9Accessories: splices, clips, wire ties, retainers and wall moulding , to complement suspension system components, as recommended by system manufacturer.

Part 3Execution

3.1INSTALLATION

SPEC NOTE: Refer to Spec Note preceding paragraph 2.1.3 re specifying more than one system.

.1Install suspension system to manufacturer's instructions and Certification Organizations tested design requirements.

.2Do not erect ceiling suspension system until work above ceiling has been inspected by the Architect.

SPEC NOTE: Specify in paragraphs .4, .5 and .10 special hanger attachment or spacing.

.3Secure hangers to overhead structure using attachment methods to industry standards or as acceptable to the Architect.

.4Install hangers spaced at maximum 1200 mmcentres and within 150 mmfrom ends of main tees.

.5Lay out according to drawings or, if no drawing is available, centre line of ceiling both ways, to provide balanced borders at room perimeter with border units not less than 50% of standard unit width.

.6Ensure suspension system is co-ordinated with location of related components.

.7Install wall moulding to provide correct ceiling height.

.8Completed suspension system to support super-imposed loads, such as lighting fixtures, diffusers, grilles and speakers.

.9Support at light fixtures diffusers with additional ceiling suspension hangers within 150 mmof each corner and at maximum 600 mmaround perimeter of fixture.

.10 Interlock cross member to main runner to provide rigid assembly.

.11Frame at openings for light fixtures, air diffusers, speakers and at changes in ceiling heights.

.12Install access splines to provide 50 percent ceiling access.

.13Finished ceiling system to be square with adjoining walls and level within 1:1000.

.14

3.2CLEANING

.1Touch up scratches, abrasions, voids and other defects in painted surfaces.
