Primary Roles

  1. Financial Improvement
  • Ensure physicians and staff produce targeted operating income and cost effective medical care
  • Educate physicians on their role in financial performance
  • Assist the CPM in annual financial performance improvement(FPI) process
  1. Quality and Care Coordination

Accountable, with the Quality Medical Director, for high performance in health maintenance and disease management registries

Coach physicians to maintain optimal Epic documentation including diagnostic coding, problem lists, plan of care, and AVS utilization.

Ensure regular feedback to physicians about TEC resource utilization including pharmacy, advanced imaging and ER/hospitalization costs

Understand and support reductions in cost of care through appropriate institutional utilization and resource management in imaging, lab and referrals.

With the CPM, support patient safety initiatives through event reporting, service recovery and Risk Management notification when appropriate

  1. Patient, Staff and Physician satisfaction

Review access and patient satisfaction; develop a plan of improvement when needed

Assist the medical director in recruiting and orienting new physicians

May serve as mentor/coach as appropriate

Conduct physician peer reviews of supervised physicians every two years with the support of the medical directors and section chairs

Facilitate effective communication between physicians and other stakeholders

Managing crises with involvement of CPM and medical director as needed

  1. Continuous Improvement

Support standard work, advanced access, utilization of TEC-IS teams and other approaches to improving processes of care

Act as a champion of positive changes at TEC

Techniques and Skills Needed To Implement These Goals

Set expectations and help create a vision

Team building

Leadership of medical and clinical staff, reminding them of TEC policies when needed

A good working relationship with the CPM and physicians

Lead peer reviews, provide focused feedback as appropriate

Help with efficiency

Understand key principles of improving systems

Identify mentors for all new physicians and set expectations for that role

Identify physicians with personal problems and refer to medical director

Ability to have effective difficult conversations and manage conflict, with support as needed.

Performance Expectations

The supervising medical director and FMD will agree upon five or fewer key performance metrics early in each calendar year in the following areas:

  • Financial performance
  • Customer satisfaction
  • Patient quality and safety
  • Best workplace
  • Continuous improvement

FMD bonuses will depend upon results in the above areas of responsibility

Meetings Required

Regular meetings with staff and physicians, monthly meetings with other FMDs

One day educational events up to twice per year; special educational meetings, if relevant , can be arranged with Medical Director at TEC expense

Supervisor: The CMO, Medical Director or Associate Medical Director

Compensation: As set by the Board of Directors

Selection

Open to all physicians at local site

Applicants interviewed by Medical Director and selected FMD(s)

Appointment for initial 4 year term by Board after recommendation by Medical Director

FMD may be changed if needed by Board

Evaluation annually by supervising Medical Director with input from physicians supervised and Clinical Practice Manager, etc.
