Notes from SBCTF Meeting #10

Participants: Tom Davis (TOPS/FH), Jen Peterson (CRS), Kara Greenblott (Nzinga Int, consultant), Marilu Chang (PRISMA), Peggy Koniz-Booher (SPRING, SCF), Tara Kovach (FANTA), Mary Gibson (WVI).

Here are some of the decisions we made today:

1.  Update on upcoming Ethiopia FSN Network Knowledge Sharing event: Tom gave an update on what SBC-related sessions would be part of this KS event in Ethiopia. For those who would like to hear some of what Tom will be presenting, this link below is a portion of the Triggering Hope session:

This link has some of the content that will be used in the Motivation of CDWs session. (This is from an earlier presentation at APHA that focused mostly on the health/nutrition sector:)

2.  SBC Guidance to FFP: There’s a need to cut the FFP guidance further (from 1.5 pages to 1 page). A small group of SBCTF members offered to make that change: Tara, Kara, Jen, and Peggy. (Please also include Diane DeBernardo who made a lot of the original edits [thanks!!].) The latest text is attached. Tara will call the meeting of that sub-group and report back at the next SBCTF meeting in July.

3.  FSN Network Discussion Forum Question: We discussed questions that we could pose on the www.fsnnetwork.org website. We would like to get input (eventually) on the questions below, but will begin by asking that the first question be posted soon:

a.  What innovative SBC methods and tools has your organization used recently? Why do you feel they are useful, and why? What sort of results have you seen?

b.  How is your organization using mHealth applications for SBC? What have been the challenges to doing that, and the solutions you have found?

c.  To what degree do the staff in your organization (field and HQ) use e-learning? If you are interested in using e-learning, what SBC topics should the SBCTF consider in e-learning applications? [Tom also to connect Peggy with Joan Whelan concerning information TOPS has from earlier surveys of practitioners regarding this.]

d.  What challenges are you seeing in applying the Designing for Behavior Change process and Barrier Analysis tool to the Agriculture, NRM, and Disaster Risk Reduction sectors? What solutions are you finding to address those challenges?

e.  How is your organization redesigning your communication approaches and tools based on specific barriers identified in earlier projects?

4.  Task force members looked over the attached draft lesson plan format for the SBC Toolkit that we will develop in conjunction with the CORE Group SBCWG. (Draft outline of the SBC Toolkit is attached.) One change was proposed to add in guidance on remembering to take into account integration (health and nutrition, livelihoods and DRR), and cross cutting themes like gender, sustainablilty, governance and partnership elements when writing lesson plans. (Jen will send Tom a sample LP that CRS uses that includes this.) This could be listed at the top of the lesson plan as a reminder to the person developing it. There was also a recommendation that the profiler of the trainers and participants be included in the introductory part of the manual. The draft lesson plan format is attached, with changes.

5.  SBCTF members also brainstormed the following suggestions for inclusion in the SBCTF Work Plan for FY13:

Ø  Writing guidance on how to design SBC-related evaluations to find out what works in terms of SBC (e.g., RCTs, wedge-step design). To do in conjunction with the METF?

Ø  Capture lessons learned and write guidance on use of DBC/BA. Collect data on studies and BA/DBC application.

Ø  Capture lessons learned and write guidance on curricula development.

Ø  Capture lessons learned and write guidance on use of communication tools (written, radio, etc.)

Ø  Review of gray and published literature on use of women's empowerment groups in Food Security programs, their results, and lessons learned. Writing guidance. (To do in collaboration with the Gender TF?) (See attached Shouardo project evaluation, which was discussed.)

Ø  Development of selected SBC Toolkit lesson plans.

Ø  Presentations at FSN Network knowledge sharing sessions (Africa, DC area).

Ø  Next step: SBCTF members should send any additional tasks they would like the task force to consider for next year. At the next meeting, we will prioritize these tasks and find “owners” for each one (people willing to take the lead on each).
