Lights! Camera! Action! TV Drama

FTVMS 311: City Campus,SemesterTwo: 15 points

This course is designed to enable students to produce a small-scale, but narratively interesting,television drama, recorded in the studio and on location. As well as developing technical skills in multi-camera production, single camera location shooting and digital editing, students will be introduced to the processes of script breakdowns, casting and directing actors. This is an intensive, workshop-style production class, which draws on creative and technical skills from drama scripting through to acting, directing and producing.

Prerequisites: 30 points Stage 2 FTVMS courses (not programme courses)

Selection Criteria:This is a restricted entry course. Students will be selected on the quality of their academic record, previous production or creative work, and their application. It is not necessary to have had previous production experience within FTVMS or outside the university and each application is judged on its merit. No timetable clashes are allowed.

Application Form (Below): Students must fill out an ‘FTVMS 311 Application Form’, available on the FTVMS undergraduate web page under ‘Making Movies’, ‘Undergraduate Production study’.

Deadline: The Application Form, samples of your creative work (optional, but strongly recommended) and a copy of your academic transcript must be submitted to the FTVMS Office, Arts 2 Building, by 4pm on Wednesday 12 June 2013.

NOTE: Your application is in addition to the on-line enrolment required by the University via Student Services online. You are encouraged to submit your application as early as possible. Students who submit their application to FTVMS later than the due date may not be considered for selection. Students who only apply online and have not submitted an application directly to the Department will not be considered for selection.

If you are an overseas student and are applying through the Study Abroad Programme, you must make provisional application by the stated deadline and may do so via email.

a)A 500 word statement of purpose outlining why you want to do this course,
and any relevant work experience you may have had.
b)An analysis of the characterisation and narrative function of ONE central
character from a current or recent NZ television drama series (EXCLUDING SHORTLAND STREET). No more than 500 words.
c) An original story idea for a short televisiondrama, containing a brief narrative outline and brief description of your characters. No more than 400 words.
3. Attach your (unofficial Student Services Online) academic transcript.
4. Submit ONE item of creative work i.e. a photographic portfolio, a short film or short film screenplay, a developed idea for a TV series, poems, a short story, critical writing (from a FTVMS course or elsewhere), or equivalent.Must be CLEARLY labelled with your name.This component is optional, but is strongly recommended.

NOTE: If you are not residing in New Zealand during the inter-semester break or are not on email ensure that you indicate on your application form how you can be contacted should you be offered a place on this course. Failure to respond within the stipulated time may result in you losing your place in the class or on the waiting list.
