SUBJECT:Staff Pharmacist - Job Description

POSITION SUMMARY: Staff pharmacists are responsible for quality, safe, appropriate, and timely medicationtherapy for patients of Bonner General Hospital.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Assures proper, accurate, and safe preparation and labeling of all medications including IV admixtures
  • Understands special medication needs and dosing parameters for neonatal, pediatric, adult and geriatric populations
  • Understanding of pain management and can apply concepts to meet needs of Bonner GeneralHospital clients
  • Monitors medication effects and outcomes
  • Dispenses medications accurately and timely according to hospital policy, state regulations and federal laws
  • Ability to communicate with physicians, staff, patients and families in a professional manner; functions as a health care team member
  • Oversee daily workflow; ability to organize daily operational duties and providing supervision to pharmacy assistants, volunteers, and students
  • Philosophy consistent with the values of Bonner GeneralHospital
  • Performs related work as required
  • Maintains strict confidentiality regarding knowledge of all patient information (HIPAA), confidential staff and hospital business
  • A positive member of the department work team; responsible for establishing and maintaining healthy interpersonal relationships with all staff members and all hospital personnel
  • BGH maintains the right to establish work schedules and to be ensured of employee’s attendance when scheduled. Maintaining regular attendance and punctuality is a required Essential Function of this position.

JOB SPECIFICATIONS:

  • Skills:

Ability to read, write legibly and comprehend the written and spoken word in English

Basic computer literacy and ability to effectively learn new software programs required

Knowledgeable of therapeutic and clinical areas of medication therapy

Knowledgeable of current practices and trends in health care specific to the pharmacy practice

Ability to communicate with physicians, staff, patients, and families in a professional manner

Ability to interact with all staff and public positively

  • Education:

Minimum Bachelors degree in Pharmacy required

  • Experience:

Hospital pharmacy experience is preferred

  • Licensure / Certifications:

Current Idaho Board of Pharmacy Pharmacist license required

Current Idaho Board of Pharmacy Controlled Substance registration required

Current CPR certification

  • Planning:

Typical planning responsibilities include organizing daily activities; planning work to accommodate the needs of drug information, quality management, patient education, and emergency, as well as distributive needs. This also requires coordination planning for assigned areas of responsibility.

  • Decisions:

The position is responsible for executing pharmacy department and professional procedures. Typical decisions include: supervising medication administration throughout the institution; determine appropriateness of medication orders both clinically and therapeutically; determining proper dosage for specific medications; deciding when to contact the physician regarding a medication order or possible problem; maintaining the formulary system by therapeutic substitution of medications; assessing drug side effects, adverse reactions, and interactions; acting for the patient with regard to safety and economy; using their best judgement in an emergency situation.

  • External contacts:

The position is responsible for external contacts, which include physicians and their office staff, representatives of the Drug Enforcement Agency, Federal Drug Administration, Board of Pharmacy, pharmaceutical manufacturers and other pharmacies. In addition, the pharmacist is in direct contact with inpatients and outpatients to provide drug information counseling. These contacts are required regarding medication matters and calls for skill and understanding in all instances.

Supervises the daily activities of the Pharmacy Technicians

Responsible for occasional supervision of pharmacy students and hospital volunteers
