NANCY’S RAINBOW SPIRAL AFGHan

Here's the pattern for the hexagons.

NOTE: At the beginning of all rounds, (except the initial circle chain), the yarn is joined with a slst. That plus the first ch2 counts as a dc, and the first ch1 counts as a sc. If you crochet tighter than I do, you may want to do ch3 and ch2. Keep in mind the slst join creates one ch.

1. With color A, ch 4, join with slst to make a circle, ch2, dc in circle, ch 1, (2 dc in circle, ch 1) 5 times. [6 groups of 2 dc]

Join with slst and fasten off.

2. Join color B in any ch 1 space. Ch 2, 2 dc in same space, (ch 2, 3 dc in next ch 1 space) 5 times. [ 6 groups of 3 dc]. Join with slst and fasten off.

3. Join color C in any ch 2 space. Ch2, 4 dc in same space, ch 3, (5 dc in next ch 2 space, ch 3) 5 times. [6 groups of 5 dc]. Join with slst and fasten off.

4. Join color D in top of 3rd dc of any 5 dc corner group. Ch 2, 2dc in same stitch, dc in next 2 dc, dc in next ch, sk 1 ch, dc in next ch, dc in next 2 dc, (3 dc in next dc, dc in next 2 dc, dc in next ch, sk 1 ch, dc in next ch, dc in next 2 dc) 5 times [54 stitches] Join with slst and fasten off.

5. Join color E in 2nd dc of any 3dc corner group. Ch 1, sc in same space, sc in next 8 dc, (2 sc in next dc, sc in next 8 dc) 5 times. [60 stitches]. Join and fasten off.

6. Join color F in 2nd sc of any corner 2sc, ch 1, sc in same stitch, sc in next 9 sc. (2sc in next sc, sc in next 9 sc) 5 times.

[66 stitches] Join and fasten off.

7. Join black (or white if that's your background) in 2nd sc of any corner 2sc, ch 1, sc in same stitch, sc in next 10 sc, (2 sc in next stitch, sc in next 10 sc) 5 times. Join and fasten off. [72 stitches]

I used the 6 colors of the rainbow in all 3 afghans but organized in 2 different ways. The small black and white ones, have each hexagon in one color, but each row of the hexagon is a different shade or hue of that color. Within that pattern you can go light to dark, dark to light or just mix them all up. The large black one has all 6 colors in each hexagon. Each spiral are has the 6 colors organized in the same way therefore ther are 6 different ways to order the colors as follows: 1. Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, Blue, Purple 2. OYGBPR, 3.YGBPRO, 4.GBPROY, 5.BPROYG, 6.PROYGB. As you can see, the order in each is actually the same, but moved up one color each time for the starting round.

To organize the spirals, start with a plain black (or white) hexagon in the center and put one of each color combination on each side and continue arranging them as in the diagram below. (Sorry for the crude drawing).

Join the hexagons to each other using the same color as the last row (black or white). With a darning needle and yarn sew them together using a slip stitch, matching the corners and sides stitch to stitch.

I used half hexagons in the same color pattern and triangles in the background color to make the afghan a rectangle
