BASKETBALL

INTRODUCTION

This 2000-2001 booklet has been compiled to recap this year’s basketball season and the history of girl’s basketball at Waynedale High School. It summarizes the 2000-2001 season, its highlights, and its team and individual accomplishments.

After a preseason of scrimmages against three teams the new version of the Lady Bears had showed signs of a new style and new era in Waynedale Basketball. Only three players had much experience from a year ago including two freshmen. With only three seniors and three juniors most around the area had serious doubts if the young Bears could compete at the varsity level. A lot of effort would be required, as well as improvement in skills to compete at the level necessary to compete with the strong Wayne County League this year. Aleah Lehman was the lone returning starter, who had been asked only to get the ball up the floor in the past along with freshman role players Toni Fry and Brittany Stowers along with Amy Dye and Bethany Bracken who had played the minimum quarters to letter. This meant little to this group, as all were willing to step up and take on new roles to help the team develop a new identity.

The year started off with an exciting overtime win versus Tuslaw, but was followed by two tough losses to Northwestern and Smithville followed by a win versus Rittman and two more losses. It seemed the Bears were going to struggle if they didn’t start playing better defense and so for the next few games it was up one night and down the next. A big athletic team from Orrville was the next opponent and it looked like they were going to blow out the young Bears, but a little run at the end of the first half to the Bears back from being down 24-6 gave them hope. At half time the Bears regrouped and came back out with a new fire. Using a great team effort on the press the Bears forged ahead by 6 points after three quarters and held on for a big win. This seemed to be the point that the Bears had learned that with a good defensive effort the points would come. The Bears made a nice run, going 9 and 5 to finish the season including a 6 and one mark before they ran into the number 1 seed and arch-rival Chippewa to finish the season. In fact, after a tough loss to 12-1 Smithville, the Bears ran off four wins by an average margin of 25 points, including a thumping of a solid Central Christian crew. The Norwayne Bobcats stopped what would have proved to be a school record winning streak of 7 in a row, but the defense was back and huge strides had been taken in restoring the winning attitude.
