Permission Slip for Woodlawn Beach Middle School2017-2018 Robotics Team

A $20.00 fee is requested to cover the cost of the t-shirt.

My child has permission to participate on the Woodlawn Beach Middle School Robotics Team.

I understand that my child may be using power tools in Ms. Farrell’s classroom. By signing below, I am acknowledging that I allow my child to operate all tools, including power tools, in Ms. Farrell’s classroom. I also understand that if my child does not follow safety rules and guidelines he/she will be subject to dismissal from the robotics team. All students will be trained and supervised during their use of tools in the robotics lab.

Initially, meetings will occur, Monday through Thursday from 1:40-2:30 and on most Saturday mornings from 9:00-12:00. Our first meeting will be on Wednesday, September 20th from 1:40-2:30. Participants are not expected to make all meetings. Please just have your child attend on the days that work best for your schedule. We meet multiple days in order to accommodate differing schedules.

Changes in meeting times will be announced at school during ITV, and communicated using the remind app. It is the student’s responsibility to keep up with the times and changes. Students are expected to maintain grades and discipline while participating in the club. Students not achieving A/B honor roll at the end of the first nine weeks grading period will be evaluated for continued participation in the club. Also, any student receiving a discipline referral, for any reason, during participation in this club will be evaluated for continued participation.

Please know that this program not only involves designing and engineering a robot but also aspects of marketing, teamwork, spirit, and sportsmanship which will be judged during the competition.

I will primarily communicate important information via the REMIND app. Please take the time to text the info below so that you will be able to receive important information and reminders. Thank you so much. This number will only be used for the robotics program.

The BEST (Boosting Engineering, Science, and Technology) competition not only involves the building of a robot to perform a specific task, but also requires team members to market the robot by producing commercials, team shirts, a website, and a display booth. Also, five to seven students must present a marketing campaign on competition day to a panel of judges who act as potential investors in the design of the robot. In addition, the students must complete a technical notebook detailing all aspects of the design and engineering of the robot-including programming. Finally, our team will also be judged on spirit and sportsmanship.

The team will only have forty-two days to build the robot and accomplish all other tasks. The mission of the robot will be revealed on “kick-off” day at the University of West Florida (UWF) field house from noon-2pm on Saturday, September 16th, 2017. I will be attending the event and you and your child are welcome to attend, as well. A bus will not be provided. Attendance is NOT mandatory for participation in the program.
